(to avoid tranposing into main line by Nxe5 d6!) d5 5.Nxe5
Bd6 6.0-0 Nd7 7.Nxd7 Bxd7 8.c4 c6 9.cxd5 cxd5 10.Qh5 0-0 11.Qxd5
This is all theory and White stands better right, I must be missing
something since it is not being played at the GM level reguarly.

there was a game between Anand and Karpov in 1999 with
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.d4 Nxe4 4.Bd3 d5 5.Nxe5 Bd6 6.0-0 Nd7 7.Nxd7 Bxd7 8.c4
c6 9.cxd5 cxd5
10.Qh5 0-0 11.Qxd5
White is a pawn up, but Black has compensation. To say White is better just
for material reasons might be a little misleading here, Whites queen on d5
is not extremely strong, and at the moment White cant do very much with his
extra pawn.
11... Bc6 12.Qh5 g6 13.Qh3 Ng5 14.Qg4 (or 14.Qh6!?) Ne6 15.Bh6 Re8 16.Nc3
Bf4 17.Bxf4 Qxd4
18.Be4
Ok, now Karpov played 18... f5?!, but Black has 18... Nxf4 (Fritz 8) 19.Qxf4
Bxe4 20.Rae1 f5
Black has regained his pawn but the pin is somewhat annoying, however, i
dont see more than a draw after
f.ex. 21.Re3 Rad8 22.Rfe1 (22.f3 Bc6!=) Rf8 23.Nxe4 fxe4 24.Qxe4 Qxb2 =
Tiviakov played this variation in 2000 and 2002 with white, but he avoided
14.Qg4 and played 14.Qh6, both games ended in a draw. It looks like Black
has enough equalizing chances in this variation.

Who sez that White stands better after 3. d4? Apparently most grandmasters
don't think so since they don't play it...
