Subject: Chigorin question
Hi

A recent game of mine went

1. d4 d5 2. c4 Nc6 3. Nc3 dxc4 4. Nf3 Nf6 5. e4 Bg4 6. Be3 e6 7.
Bxc4 Bb4 which is pretty standard stuff. I was expecting my opponent
to continue 8. Qc2 but he didn't, he replied 8. d5

Now I can't find this move in any of my books, nor can I find any
reference to this move being played at high level - which suggests that
this move is inferior. My question is why and what should I have
responded. (I played 8. .. Bxc3+ and went on to loose)

Regards
Roger

Unless you are lucky and a GM.

"Anand in fact replayed, move for move, a rapid game he had played last
summer against Shirov in Mainz. The world's number two required only
five minutes of his clock time to execute all his moves."

Luck has little to do with that.

This doesn't contradict what I said above.

8 Bxc3+ is perfectly fine, so you didn't lose here, you lost later.

Hi, Roger,

I found the following games in my database. While Black had an
excellent score overall, it doesn't seem to be because 8. d5 is a bad move.
Fritz 9 gives it: = (-0.03) and White's sixth best move behind
8. Qd3, 8. Qc2, 8. Bd3, 8. e5, or 8. h3 but I'm a little suspicious
of its evaluations early in the openings.

Regards,
John
