In the 12. d3 line of the shall Attack, after 12.. Bd6 13. Re1 Qh4
14. g3 Qh3 15. Re4 Qf5 16. Nd2 Qg6 why not 17. Nf1 instead of the
currently popular 17. Re1?

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3
O-O 8. c3 d5 9. exd5 Nxd5 10. Nxe5 Nxe5 11. Rxe5 c6 12. d3 Bd6 13. Re1
Qh4 14. g3 Qh3 15. Re4 Qf5 16. Nd2 Qg6 17. Nf1 *

While 17...f5 may have raised doubt (see Nijboer - v.d.Sterren 1989,
1-0), strong players ~2500 have responded with the natural 17...Nf6 or
even 17...h5, drawing. I'm not an opening expert, but maybe there is no
specific reason not to play Nf1?

(In some older opening encyclopedias I have, either 12.d3 or 16.Nd2 is
missing.)
