Subject: Sam's Games from the World Open
I played poorly in the World Open in games 4 and 5. I do not know what
went wrong with me, especially in Game 4. Perhaps these games can be
used to lure another opponent into a one thousand dollar grudge match
like the one I won the previous weekend in Chicago.

The last game, which I won, was fairly interesting against a
promising Junior.

My score of 6-3 earned me a prize of $37.50, but was not a great
victory considering the entry fee of $280.

threatening mate on the a2-g8 diagonal?

Why not? Already, I am a knight ahead.

I would have won the game, but I made several mistakes later.

As I've already explained this opening is a forced win for White. The first
player must play accurately, even computer-like, but he always prevails (in
theory).

Of course, the game does not end in the opening, and I understand your
doubtness about the Knight' sac.
But do you really enjoy playing f6, or Ke7-f7-g6 in the opening? Look at the
King's itenerary, isn't it a hazard-shape?

This was the second year in a row he's played it at the World Open.
Last year he beat a low Expert/high A player with it, although he didn't
have as much luck with it this year.

To have luck with this opening is like to shoot yourself and hope to live
longer.

You have to put it in context. There was a long running thread where he
kept posting analysis defending Damiano's Defense. It's a losing battle
because the defense is no good, but with a mix of analysis and optimism
he kept coming up with ideas.

Anyway, this was happening early last Summer and so when the World Open
happened he actually played it against a good player and won with it.
That's putting your money where your mouth is and you have to respect

-- even if you don't respect the opening or Sam!
