i'm a novice at chess and would like to know what is the most useful
piece after the queen?

a second queen!! :-)

...

Well, if there are no more queens, a rook.

But in any case you need to make "good" your pieces (that mean give them
active possibilities).

The "traditional" evaluation is that the number of pawns each piece is
worth is:

B/N 3
R 5
Q 9-10

But a more modern treatment is sumized in this article:

http://www.chesscafe.com/text/heisman15.pdf

where the breakdown is:

B/N 3.25 pawn
R 5
Q 9.75

plus a few additional considerations (2 bishops = 0.5 pawn; active king
in endgame ~ 4 pawns).
