Ok lets see.
Do you have any favourite/inspiring chess movies? Are there that many?
For example I've seen only two.

The Luzhin Defence http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0211492/ based loosely on a
true story but I dont think anyone who knows moderately good chess will fall
for the mate at the end. Nevertheless interesting little movie

Searching for Bobby Fischer http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108065/ the story
of Josh Waitzkin. I am sure many know this movie and who Josh is (he is also
in Chessmaster 10). Not overly inspiring (or good for that matter) but where
else can you see Laurence Fishburne pretending to be a chess hustler?

What do you guys think?

You could look at 'La Diagonale du Fou' (1984).

Yes, he wore the foil to prevent his thoughts from leaking out, or
prevent hostile rays from affecting his play, or some such nonsense.
Probably inspired by the accusations seen in the Fischer-Spassky,
Korchnoi-Karpov, and/or Korchnoi-Spassky matches, or perhaps the
eccentricities of Rubinstein and Nimzovitch.

Gene Hackman plays a private detective who plays chess. In one scene
he shows a game in which a player missed a beautiful combination,
involving several knight moves, and lost. It symbolizes regrets and
missed opportunities in the detective's own life. If I can dig up the
game I'll post it. The movie is not a great one, but still pretty good.
Quite a shocking twist at the end. I like almost everything Hackman has
done; he's an excellent actor.
"Chess Life" ran a good article on chess in films back in the 1970s.
If I can find that issue I'll post some of the films here.

The September 2005 "Chess" has a short article on chess in films.

Actually that gave me an idea. We should post the endgames from such movies
and see if anyone actually finds the mates/traps without using kitchen foil.

"Bad Company" with Anthony Hopkins and Chris Rock (he plays a chess
hustler).

I haven't seen either of those movies you mentioned, although I'd lik
to. What I'd really like to see made would be a chess movie set in th
days when chess theory was very new and there were many distinct an
divided schools of thought. Some of the personalities and rivalrie
that must have been around then would make good film material

A dreadful flick, in my opinion. Saw it once, never wanted to see it
again. The early scene with the Grand Guignol bit of stabbing the
child's hand with a pen was enough to turn me off, and the chess
content was conceived by some screenwriter who didn't know a knight
from a knackwurst. A better flick with a similar name is "Night Moves"
starring Gene Hackman. Relatively little chess content, but that little
was done intelligently.

Indeed I agree with you it was a bad movie. I cannot actually remember most
of the chess bits (seen it long long time ago) but I remember that blind old
guy that has able to visualise the chess game in his head and find the mate
in 5 moves (which I found at the time amazing) and what was that with the
chessplayer and the tinfoil on his head (reminiscent of the movie Signs
anyone?).

I checked out the Night moves at IMDB. It doesn't seem to mention anything
about chess, however I will try and watch it.

Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" starring Max von Sydow would have to be
a strong candidate for "Best Movie with a Chess Theme."

I didn't know that The Luzhin Defence was based loosely on a true
story. The only chessplayer I know who committed suicide by jumping out
of a window was GM Lembit Oll. Was the story based on him?

No - The Luzhin Defence was published in 1930, Lembit Oll's committed
suicide in 1999.

Nabokov got his inspiration from the life of Curt von Bardeleben who
commited suicide by jumping out of his window in 1924
