This is not a mere coincidence. Going back
/at least/ as far as M-chess, programs which
prefer Bishops to Knights seem to have
dominated the rankings, and I've noticed that
the current top dog, Rybka, is no exception.

At one time, the then-highest rated player
of all time, Bobby Fischer, called the desirable
trade of a Knight for the opponent's Bishop
"winning the minor exchange", and some of
the Russians have used a scoring system
which values the difference between Bishop
and Knight at a quarter of a pawn or more.

One "study" held that it was not that a
Bishop was superior, but rather that taken
together, the /two Bishops/ were better
than the combination of Bishop and Knight,
or two Knights, provided of course that they
moved on different colors. Some chess
engines seem to have incorporated this
idea in their scoring of positions and their
play.

Of course, it always depends on the
position, but I've seen games where the
two Bishops accomplish incredible feats,
when properly handled. Knights are good
in positions where pawns are blocked, as
they can just hop over (as in the starting
position, with 1. Nf3).

There's in theory a small advantage to bishops when you go past the
middlegame towards the endgame. But a book called "N vs. B: the
verdict" found the N's do quite well, better than some thought.

So it depends on the position.

Yes your right , it depends on the position ..

I kind of like the long range power ...Maybe a knight and a bishop in
the end game that way you get the best of both...
