I'm trying to create a database in CB9 that will only include games that
really matter; i.e. strong games.

A major challenge is the lack of ELO ratings for computers, and all games
before about 1975.

What is the BEST way to assign reasonably accurate ratings to computers and
any games before 1975?

I know that Fritz has a way to assign ratings to a database, but I
understand that it requires exact name consistency and could take a week or
more for a million game database.

Rating is a win/lose chance in a particular group of people, it doesn't tell
you something about "strength". There are no accurate ratings without
opponents, or with two disconnected groups.

Jeff Sonas has posted quite some calculations for people like him who
believe that "historical" ratings have meaning:

Try emailing your question to Steve Lopez of Chessbase affliation. I
he has already done an article related to your question maybe he wil
point you to it. If he hasn't done an article maybe he can provide yo
with an answer. Find his email contact address at the bottom of th
linked to page.

Of course it is asked that no tech support questions be emailed to hi
and I don't know if your "How to" question will be regarded as tha
type of question.
