I am a beginning chess player and would like to buy a chess game for m
PC so that I can practice. Does anyone know of a good one? I would lik
one that has beginner levels, so that I won't get frustrated by tryin
to beat a game that is unwinnable except by an expert. Th

I also agree with chessmaster 10 being the best
for beginners.

Also check out 'arena' and some of the free
chess engines that can be plugged into it.

Chessmaster 10. Hands down. I had an earler version of Fritz and it
was terrible. CM gives you dozens of pre-set "human" opponents that
you can easily find a group at or around your level. Don't waste your
time with Fritz. Too hard to find suitable opponents. Seems designed
for serious players only (CM will play at all levels).

It's not really fair to compare the latest version of Chessmaster with an
old version of Fritz. :-)

Fritz does, indeed, seem to be more aimed at the more experienced/serious
player and isn't, I think, much use for a beginner. I've not used
Chessmaster myself but it is the most common recommendation here for
beginners and lots of people seem to be very happy with it.

Look up Chessmaster and look up Fritz. Two separate programs by tw
separate companies.

Chessmaster 10th edition is the current one for that program, and Frit
9 is the current one for that.

I have Chessmaster 9000 and Fritz 8. I do not have the current editio
of either program.

Do a search in this forum ( chessbanter.com ) for the above program
and you can also find a few other chess forums on the Internet. Use th
search option in those forums because your question has been answere
many times in different places (I'm not being short with you, jus
stating a fact). When you do a search you will learn the pluses an
minuses (if any) of each program. Regardless, you will need to use th
search option once you get your program so as to learn more about it i
depth. That's what I did.

A really good forum (my opinion) is www.chessexchange.com (more geare
toward Fritz's company than Chessmaster's).

Chessmaster's official forum is at
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/ubb.x/a/frm/f/760105752

Make sure the program you decide on will run on your computer. Chec
the specifications.

You can still find older versions of each program. Sometimes at a goo
price. Don't think that you have to have the most current one.

Your Chess Program education is just beginning. Enjoy the ride. :)

Anyway that's my two cents. Good Luck

I like ChessMaster 10 - it has the most slick interface and can be set
to play any level from hopeless incompetent to Grandmaster.
