Dar Chesslovers,

The CrapBase server can't cope with "too many users". The reliable software
doesn't work. What a crap...

Hello

I have seen messages from Michael pointing out failings off the
Chessbase server.

First of all, I would like to say, I love Arena - right at the
beginning, when I was looking for some free software to dip my toes
into computer chess, I found Arena - great stuff! Really; the
combination of Crafty and/or Fruit and Arena is a great thing --- This
is world class level chess software for free. For that I am grateful
to Michael and the other authors.

That said... I went ahead and got Fritz 11 very recently and I have
been very happy with it... both Fritz and the server...

I have to ask...

1) While I understand that a case could be made for Chessbase as a
competitor to Arena, well, really? Let's see

a) Chessbase as a chess server - this is the more tenuous... if
anything, it should be ICC and/or FICS the ones posting this
messages... the Arena software I used (the 1.99 betas) don't support
any of the servers... so, why?

b) Chessbase as a chess software company - well, this is pretty
obvious... I agree that many people will spend money for Chessbase
products when in fact, Arena + some of the stronger free engines could
do perfectly fine... Additionally, Michael could have an issue with
Chessbase's propietary format (which is neither UCI or Winboard) which
I understand keeps Fritz from working with Arena...

I think in both cases a better strategy is to open a formal problem
record with Chessbases support... maybe even a petition should do and
the notifying Chessbase of the support the petition generated. But I
still wonder how posting to this group would address the issues.

Just my humble opinion - I could be wrong, it's been known to happen.

Thnx!
V

Hello,

I am pointing them out because custemers should be informed what they buy.
At least now they can't come back and say they didn't know.

It is your money :) You can buy what you want. ChessBase thinks the engine
protocol doen't work in Arena. Are they right ? What do you think ? Are we
going to make it public ? No. Did we get any donnations ? Yes. A few. Not
enough to make it public. But we don't work on Arena to take your money and
then say "F... off" like ChessBase does. We are different ! We make it for
fun !

Sorry I don't write anything to a company who has stolen my life-time
account and is accusing users of cheating based on a "reliable" piece of
software. As one of their sysops states in his profile, "if a decision is
final, then it is final" .You can see that their software is NOT reliable.

Hello Chesslovers,

6000 users is too much for them. They should try ICC and FICS :)

BZZZZZT! The `uptime' command on FICS reports that their server is
configured for a maximum of 3990 ordinary users plus ten admins.

Nice try, Michael, but no cigar.

Hello David and other chesslovers,

I think you just pointed out the difference. They SAY it and do not pretend
anything. They are FREE. I can assure you that even donations which will not
reach the amount of money ChessBase reaches will make it miles better than
ChessBase.

Oter paying servers like WoW supports 50.000 users and more without
crashing. If a comapny is prepared to take money from the customers it
should be prepared to resolve bugs without kicking users who mention them
from the server and add resonable server support.

I am a nonsmoker anyway. I don't want to become as mad as a certain
incompetent ChessBase sysop (he is very famous), do I ? :)
