Subject: Dedicated chess computer games

Thought it might be interesting to post a message that actually
relates to the newsgroup, i.e. not spam or chess politics. You never
know someone may be interested...
Anyone who has plowed their way through all the rubbish (or filtered
it out) should know that SAT W-7 has an Ivan II dedicated chess computer
(that talks!). He has often asked if anyone would be interested in
playing another dedicated chess computer against his Ivan. Well, I took
up his challenge. I have a Kasparov Cosmos chess computer (I actually
have other chess computers, but that is another story), which plays
reasonable chess, especially for a travel set (portable, not tabletop).
SAT W-7 and I have played 5 games so far through a chatroom. The
computers seem pretty well matched, i.e. both have pretty bad opening
books! :) I have listed the games below for other people's interest.
Please comment, if you wish. Sensible comments, please.
The first game was a rapid 30 minute game, while the other four were
the highest settings on the computers - 40 moves in 2 hours. We have
just started a random game.

The reason why i say it seems the elo's are close is because the games
seem so even to me and one will make a slight mistake and end up losing
.
This random game has been fun too , i will ask him to post the set up
and moves ..
The position now is a draw i belive ???

I have never see Ivan draw before so we are going to play them a few

time each player picked the starting position for their opponent, rather

This is pgn for the second random game played between Ivan II and
Kasparov Cosmos. The starting position was NOT mirrored like the first
random game.
Actually White's starting position was better, but Kasparov Cosmos
playing as Black won!

After playing the two random games we (SAT W-7 & RocketMan) decided
to play another standard game, this time between Ivan II and my little
Tandy 1650.
I bought this chess computer way back in 1986. It has had many games
played on it, and is a great chess companion for the beginning chess
player. It may have only 8 levels, but on it's lowest setting (2 sec /
move) plays good basic (structured) chess. Although it is called Tandy
1650, I would rate it more like 1450, especially at it's lower settings.
Obviously we played Andy at a higher setting (3 min / move), but it
still wasn't a match for Ivan.

Here is the set up to the above post ...
Black
On
Rooks on- D-F- 8
Knights on- A-H-8
bishops on - B-G-8
Queen on - C-8
King on E-8
White On..
Rooks on C-E-I
Knights on A-F-I
Bishops on G-H-I
Queen on B-I
King on D-I
ALL pawns in the same spots ..
I
hand picked the black set up because i believed he will have to open the
King up to get the rooks out and i put the Knights in that position
because it would limit the first move ...
But i have come to the same conclusion one of you have come too , his
computer is stronger than mine .....elo ......
Still these are good games , exciting to watch them go at it ...
I really thought my Ivan would have won this game because of the set
up of the major pieces.....
One of the moves Ivan opened up his rook and his bishop was all over it
.....traded ......
The mirrored random game was a draw and this one i hand picked his
pieces was a loss.
He just picked white at random .......
Ivan never really got the bishops out and that was bad ...
Even though Ivan has been getting beat i still having fun playing it
.....

In this random game we had the major pieces mirror each other ...We mite
have a game where they do not have the same set up ..

Great to have computer chess in rgcc! Especially some dedicated games
Actually they don't look particularly close in Elo looking through the
games, and the Cosmos leads 4-1 which is pretty healthy for it. But I
look forward to MORE of this sort of thing :-)
