I can buy "Fritz Chess 9" from Excalibur Publishing (UK Chessbase
distributor) much cheaper than the "standard version" from Chessbase. The
specs seem to be exactly the same - including a year's membership to
playchess.com. Except on the Excalibur site they don't advertise this:

"Chess course for advanced players (3 hrs. video in Chess Media System) a
3-hour tutorial for advanced players."

Has anyone bought the Excalibur version? And how good is that advanced
course that I may be missing out on if anyone has tried it? What rating
range is it directed at?

Excalibur version has the chess course (anyway not big deal to have it
are some files from aagard, kasparov etc windows media file CDs). IMHO
the 2 versions are identical. Who knows why excalibur is cheapest.

Thanks, Antonio. I'll go and save myself some money then. Since it's sold as
Fritz Chess 9 it would be a bit odd if it weren't the same product.

I also found a US version from Viva Media or something. Maybe the lower
price tag is explained by the desire to reach a wider audience. Features
like the Turk and a 3D chess set are not gonna impress your regular gamer to
shell out the same amount of money as a chess enthusiast.

Features like the Turk and the fancy 3D sets are there exactly to impress
the regular gamer -- they're practically useless to the chess enthusiast.
