Subject: Easy v Vlad
|
Greetings, Below are two games between GetClub's Easy level and Vlad, once of the Chessmaster personalities who is rated approximately 1850 USCF. Each side had White once. The result is 1.5-0.5 for Vlad. The first game was a complete strangulating win for Vlad, giving checkmate in only 33 moves. Vlad uses rather unorthodox openings, and was not doing well as of the first few moves of the game. However, Easy forgot what "tempo" means and played 6...Ng4 and 8...Nd4. After that, it was simple for Vlad to continue the squeeze and win, exploiting a very useful pin on Easy's d5 pawn. Easy had a simple win in the second game, thanks to some poor moves by Vlad, but failed to make the obvious move of 105.Kxh5. This drew the game. I ended this game early because Vlad uses endgame tablebases and the position was a guaranteed draw when Easy played (for some inexplicable reason) 105.Kg6 instead. Yes, I played through 105 moves with Easy -- never again. Easy took about 2.5 hours to make all of its moves; Vlad took eight seconds. At best, given the fact that I've only played two games, I would say that Easy is somewhere between 1700-1900 USCF. Easy is significantly stronger than Beginner, which I would estimate at about 1200 USCF. This was all very tedious, so I'm done. Sanny, please don't bother to say that the above move (105.Kg6) was "a bug that has been removed and now GetClub plays twice stronger". jm

I probably should clarify how Vlad works. It has a search depth of 3 (about 1/4 of what Easy searches on average, as far as I can tell from the interface). This is why it moves so quickly. The second game shows how an engine with such a low search depth, no matter how strong, has little ability to make a plan or take advantage of an opening. The game was very exhausting and discouraging to play through, not just because of the time involved, but because Vlad refused to go for the kill that Easy offered it on many occasions. jm
