Subject: From Junior 9 to Hiarcs 10 - A big improvement !

Hello everybody,

I want to tell you about my first experiences with Hiarcs 10.

After using Junior 9 for one year I bought Hiarcs 10 a few days ago and ...
what a difference !

I am not a strong player at all but I never got a good feeling about Junior.
And after playing one year with the program, I can not say my chess has been
improved. Junior plays very tactical and quite agressive and even in friend
mode it overclasses me always with tactical tricks from which a player
learns nothing. If I win a game in friend mode, it was simple because Junior
gave away so much material that a win was easy for me. The program seems to
have no feeling for the positional aspect of the game... Junior feels like
an engine who's play stands very far from the human player and the program
has no feeling or understanding for human - positional ideas in chess. At
least this is my impression.

Looking for a "better" engine I bought Hiarcs 10 and I am very pleased with
it. Playing agains Hiarcs is a totally different experience. The program
seems to understand what I am intended to do and counterplay my ideas. I can
easily say that: after a few games agains Hiarcs, I start to have a much
better understanding about my own play than one year with Junior. I don't
know how Hiarcs does it but his engine is really "intelligent" in the way it
understand my ideas and gives a corresponding reaction. And important: It
gives you the space to develop your own idea's on the chessboard.

I am sure with Hiarcs, my play will definitely improve and I will have a
much better understanding of the game.

I dont know about Fritz or Shredder but in every way, comming from Junior 9,
Hiarcs 10 is definitely a big improvement !

Thanks for reading this,

regards

siegfried

Hi Siegfried,

Hiarcs 10 is good - but Rybka ist much better.
(And Rybka is still full of bugs,
without endgame knowledge,
without access to endgame table bases).

In a match, 50 games, 40 moves in 40 min,
Rybka blow Hiarcs 10 away with 68 %
(won 34 out of the 50 games).

For details:

Rybka is still the strongest chess playing program of the world
(one can purchase).

It's pretty clear from Siegfried's article that he's interested in playing
style rather than raw strength. If you feel that Rybka is more suited to
Siegfried's needs, please explain why rather than ranting about how many
games it can win against Hiarcs. We all know that Rybka is strong.

Well said! I am amazed at how deep this computer program...
gladiatorial fetishism runs among some hobbyists. Every time
I come across a terse post asking for advice as to the "best"
chess program around, I am tempted to respond in rather long-
winded fashion. But, then, again, I am _so_ glad that 99% of
the time I do not. 8 >)
