Subject: GNUchess vs. Phalanx 0-1 !!!
The Phalanx XXII engine, while playing as black, has defeated GNUchess
5.07 in an engine-vs-engine match without time limits on my system.

This came as a surprise to me, as I had read from several sources that
Phalanx was a much weaker engine than the GNU effort.

Here's a picture of the checkmate:

XBoard and the engines were invoked with: "xboard -xponder -xclock -fcp
gnuchess -scp 'phalanx -e 0' -mode TwoMachines &". I'm attaching the
game's PGN file.

In my own testing and in the rating lists that I've seen, Phalanx was
always approximately 200 rating points stronger than GnuChess. I saw
a few pages like this one

http://flamendialis.wordpress.com/2008/02/26/phalanx/

that said Phalanx was weaker than GnuChess, but they are talking about
a version that is deliberately weakened. GnuChess only has one
playing level, whereas Phalanx can have its playing strength adjusted.
You used the -e0 command line option with Phalanx, which makes it play
full strength.

Did you play a game like that with your computers ?

What i noticed about Ivan was when it made moves it was thinking pretty
much at top strength even on the first move.. When you set up like that
there is no opening book....

Hey that was good , i liked the pic too,,

Can you program where each piece go's on your computers ? If you can
have them play a game of random chess vs each other ...

I have played two games against my Ivan and lost both... I put the
major pieces in a paper bag ( all of them ) and get tongs so i can not
feel the shape of them and pull them out of the hat and place them on
the board and how ever they come up is how they come up except the
bishops of course , i make sure they are on different colors and i have
NO castling .....I do not have another computer to play that game with
so i have played two games vs Ivan myself and they have been exciting
games even though i lost ....
O and ALL pawns go on their normal squares....

Try a game like that and see how they play each other because there is
no opening set of moves .....The last game i lost was set like this.

White

A-I = Rook
E-I = Rook
B-I = Queen
C-I= Bishop
H-I =Bishop
D-I = Knight
G-I= Knight
F-I -= King

Black ...

A-8 = Knight
F-8= Knight
B-8 = Rook
G-8 = Rook
C-8 = Queen
D-8 = Bishop
E-8 = Bishop
H-=8 King..

Set your two computers like that and see who wins ..
I was white and as you can see Blacks King was in a great spot ..+ his
bishops were in a good spot too ...My first move was D-I to C-3 and
Blacks first move was A-I to B-6 Knight move .....

I threw in NO Castling to make the game a little harder , you do not
know where the King will come be at the start of the game..

Want to play a game like that , my Ivan vs one of your computers ? You
can tell me how to set my power pieces up and i'll tell you how to set
yours up ...Mite be a exciting game .....
