Subject: Junior wins
I got to watch two games in the last round of the World Computer
championship, one by Junior and one by Rybka. It was hard not to see them
as people and start cheering for them as they found moves and solved
problems. It was all I could do not to see faces on them as I watched the
moves. Junior played entertaining, superior chess, and I admired him. In
the Rybka game, Rybka found a plan in a stuck position that led to a win.
All but one of us who were watching on ICC were sure the stifled position
could only be drawn. When it became clear to me that Rybka had found a
great move and plan, I actually applauded him. In the Rybka-Junior game,
Junior was able to save himself with brilliant defensive play and drew.
Junior was clearly the tournament winner.

So I anthropomorphized the program and felt silly -- and I enjoyed every
minute of it.

Yes, but it was not a public version, but a smp on a quad.
It seemed like there was some hardware problems at some points.
A bit of an experiment, to join a tournament with a setup without more
prior testing. Maybe that's why he used hes own name.
Probably the version used is whats going to become Rybka 2 (deep) when
developed further.

Did not play. A press release I read somewhere states that it's
'reserving' for it's match against Kramnik this september. I suppose
they somehow did not want to reveal how Fritz 9 reacts in various
positions. Still Kramnik can simply buy a copy and play against it ...

Or Shredder 10? The UCI version of that engine has been out for awhile now.

The program that played as "Shredder" is acually Deep Shredder 10.
Funny, they newer use version numbers in these events.

Junior beat Deep Shredder 10? In all honesty, I am rather surprised by this
considering the ELO jump they are claiming.

Junior isn't the 1 old version some of us have.
And btw. Shredder beat Rybka.
"Anything" can happen with such few games, and they're all strong programs.

It didn't play. More peculiar is that Rybka played under and alias. Must
be some reason for that.
