Whenever I create a PGN file using ChessBase 8, it uses $x in place of !, ?, etc., symbols. How do I get it to create a human-readable PGN file without these annoying $x's? Thanks!

I've enhanced the MyChessViewer applet as seen here www.mychess.com to include the fritz NAGs. www.night-ray.com/chess/games I've taken the Fritz analysis and placed it in a PGN... the Java applet is reading them directly without modification. MyChessViewer official release crashes with certain Fritz output and doesn't handle all the NAGs. I've sent my code to the author and he's thinking about making my changes official. Anyways, you can download my classes and source code from the website here: www.night-ray.com/chess/games/ChessViewer.zip In there you'll find all the NAGs, official & fritz, so you could use that with your search and replace. zenpawn wrote: > Whenever I create a PGN file using ChessBase 8, it uses $x in place of > !, ?, etc., symbols. > > How do I get it to create a human-readable PGN file without these > annoying $x's? > > > Thanks! >

Regarding the suggestion to unannotate the game or database, I want to keep the annotations, but would prefer them in human-readable form. And believe it or not, my friend appears to have a PGN reader that is unfamiliar with NAGs. I guess I have to use the 'ole "Find and Replace" technique. :( According to the PGN spec kindly referenced above, it appears a limited set of symbols, the exclam, question mark, etc., can remain in the so-called "Import" format of PGN. ChessBase lets you export to plain text, but it isn't as understandable to PGN readers. I was just hoping, if I keep my annotations to the limited set of the "Import" PGN format, that I could get the best of both worlds, i.e., a human and computer-readable PGN. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something in ChessBase. Thanks all.

Those symbols (NAGS "Numerical Annotation Glyphs ") are annotations in PGN format ...control shift y will remove them in a single game Alternativey, to clear the entire database, I suggest you create a new databsse and copy the games you want unannotated to this database, right click and select >TOOLS>UNANOTATE DATABASE. Use that database to export games into PGN format without the NAGS.

Perhaps you need to explore what other file formats are support -- perhaps some text-format may do what you want? -- Anders Thulin ath*algonet.se http://www.algonet.se/~ath

There is, as far as I'm aware, no option in Fritz to do this. You can use a text editor to search and replace, though. The full list of the $x symbols is at http://www.very-best.de/pgn-spec.htm#10.
