It is odd to find such a quality set, mass produced and available to
a large number of the public. Designed by Kasparov it says on the
box, hard to believe.

That's not a good set. The pieces are too big for the squares.

These are good sets:

The first one looks like plastic. Here are some good ones:

Many players prefer high-quality weighted plastic colored
black and ivory chessmen on a green and cream "mousepad"
rollup board to anything made out of wood. Visibility and
contrast is better, the plastic allows more detailed pieces
and the set is almost indestructible.

If you have, say, $30-40 to spend on a set of pieces, then you are
definitely better off spending that on a high-quality plastic set such
as the ones you mentioned. A wood set with a list price in that range
wouldn't be worth having. But the House of Staunton ebonized ProLine,
with a list price of $99, can't be beat as far as bang for the buck.

BTW, each week House of Staunton puts sets on eBay, and the plastic
ones are about $20 less than the list price, see
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZhstaunton
but the shipping is high - around $15 or so.

What is the playing surface like on that board? Is it cloth-like
(like mousepads) or a slicker vinyl, like most vinyl boards?

Rubber backed, cloth surfaced, just like most mousepads.

I tend to pick up the pieces when moving them, and thus prefer
the cloth. Those who slide a bit would obviously like something
slicker.

Hmmmmmm. I wonder if one could use an adhesive to put a vinyl
board on top of a mousepad board, thus combining the mousepad's
lie-flat and non-slip properties with the vinyl's slicker
surface?

Another possible solution: replace the felt on the bottom of
your chess pieces with vinyl cirlves cut from a vinyl board.
That might give you the feel you like with a mousepad board.

I have one of those, except natural (cream) instead of white pieces.
It is a good plastic set, as far as plastic sets go. I'm definitely
going to get one of the roll-up boards you recommended. I have a
great roll-up board from the 1980s, but it got damaged about two years
ago. Since then I've bought two rollup boards and one mousepad board,
but none of them were as good as the old one. I'm going to try the
one you recommend. I assume it lies flat.

I have never seen a mousepad-style board that doesn't lie flat,
and have never seen a regular rollup board that did, but of course
I obviously have never tried your roll-up board from the 1980s.

What didn't you like about the mousepad style board? I don't think
the one I recommended will be much different other than the fact
that the new ones don't have a plastic odor.

That is indeed a good chess set, but it is made of wood.
Some folks love wood, but as a matter of personal taste,
I like plastic better.

Here is the set I recommended above on the house of
staunton web site:
http://www.houseofstaunton.com/Plastic_Collector.html

Then again, there is alway the high end...
A set of top-of-the-line Jaques wooden Chessmen costs
$4,995.00 USD on the above website, or you can get a set
made out of 20,000 year old Mammoth ivory (legal to own;
elephant ivory is illegal in most wetern countries) that
is listed a "call for price." :)

Just because a set is wood doesn't mean that it is good - there are a
lot of wood sets that aren't worth having. But I've seen lots of sets
in the last 40 years, and I believe that the House of Staunton
Ebonized Proline is absolutely the best set for the money. The
ebonized one is $99 list price. When they are on eBay they are a lot
less than that.

Thanks.

Quite Sensible.

In _Stalag 17_, the film, the Nazi spy, Peter Graves, uses a hollow Queen to

I have one relatively high-quality plastic set (high quality as far as
plastic sets go) and about 25 wood sets. The details are better in
the wood sets. The website I gave does have some good plastic sets,
but good wood sets are better.

I have a mousepad board, but I don't use it because the pieces don't
slide on it.
