Subject: Replacement engine for Convekta training software?
Convekta's series of training software (e.g. CT-ART, Theory and Practice of
Endgames) comes with the Crafty and Dragon engines. I think Crafty is a
pretty old version.

Does anyone know how to get these products to use a different engine? I
imagine the easiest would be using a newer version of Crafty.

Does anyone know if other engines will work? If so, what is, in your
opinion, the best engine for endgame analysis?

Thanks.

Anon,
I tried this in Convekta's 'Chess Tactics for Begginers'.

1. Click options, and then in the options dialog go to the engines tab.
2. This one only comes with Crafty built-in. Looked in the 'engine
type' combo and saw only Zarkov5, Shredder 3/4 and Crafty types. I
assumed that, since Crafty is a winboard engine, this option would work
for any winboard engine.
3. Downloaded Delfi and extracted the zip file contents into a
directory
4. Setup the engine setting the name to 'Delfi', engine type to
'Crafty' and the path to the program (including the name of the .exe
file, of course). Hit 'add' when finished.
5. Ticked the new 'Delfi' engine as the active one. Click 'ok' in the
options dialog.
6. Choose a test position and hit 'play'
7. The Delfi engine worked perfectly.

One last comment. Since Stefan Meyer (Shredder programmer) invented the
UCI protocol. I assume that choosing 'Shredder 3/4' as engine type,
allows you to use an UCI engine. I had no time to test this, though.

As for a good engine for endgame analysis. Shredder is usually
mentioned as a good one for such situations. In my view, though, what
matters most is using tablebases with the engine so that from the
middlegame it can use them in it's analysis.

Good luck.

Just to clarify, Shredder 3 and 4 are Winboard engines. You need to
use wb as a command line parameter to get them to run as Winboard
engines, rather than as a standalone GUI. Shredder 5 was the first
version to use the UCI protocol.
