Subject: a question about Chessmaster 10th edition
When I run Chessmaster 10th edition and use the feature
called "Thinking Lines" I am confused about one of the
columns of information given. A typical line might read:
.
Time Depth Score Positions Moves
-------------------------------------------------------------------
0:35 3/11 0.98 5844604 etc.....
1:38 3/12 1.09 16733681 etc.....
.
I understand all of the above except for one column.
What does the 3/11 and 3/12 mean in the depth column?
Thank you for your time in responding.
Tony

Q: What do the two numbers (X/Y) mean in the "Depth" column of the
Mentor Lines and Thinking Lines windows?
A: The first number is the "brute force" search depth, which means that
all possible moves up to that depth have been searched by the engine.
The second number is called the "minimum extension depth", and it is
also sometimes called the "nominal search depth". This is the minimum
depth that the most promising have been searched to. So, for example, a
depth of 3/12 means that all possible combinations of three moves from
the current position have been searched, and those combinations that
are most likely to be considered to be "best play" have been searched
to a minimum depth of 12 moves.

I can't answer authoritatively as I don't have Chessmaster.

Fritz uses this kind of notation to mean that it's considered every
possibility[1] up to three ply and some lines out to eleven/twelve
ply.
