FICS took the site down 11/20 for hardware replacement. Hopefully the
site will be back online soon.

It's toast.

If you note, the website has been down too. http://www.freechess.org

I can't find anything special as to why it has "gone missing", but I think the
last of the great free chess servers may have passed.

Server downtime last night (Monday 21st) was announced on Friday. The
webserver is still down but you can still connect using a client such
as Babaschess[1], pointed at freechess.org, port 5000.

Because *obviously* if a server is down for a couple of hours, it'll
never, ever come back. Jeez guys, come on. Stop with the morbid
speculation already.

Indeed ... the server appears to be back up again. I am glad to hear it, as I
have always enjoyed my time on FICS.

There have been several posts made here over the last couple of months, and
many times that I checked [not just this latest episode], they were indeed
down, which is why I made that incorrect assumption.

Yes, me.
It's been like this for several weeks now.
Someone posted a way to connect to FICS, a while back, but that was very
unclear.
Hopefully it can be cleared up now.
