Subject: openingbook fileformat? sample sources? what to use?
Hi,

To improve my chess-program I'm planning to add an opening-book to it.
Not wanting to re-invent the wheel I would like to ask if someone can point
me to documents describing the fileformat of a openingbook and a free to
use openingbook.

While the source code is available - but far from free - you can use the
free download of Bookup 2000 Express to create opening books. Even after
the trial period expires, the program will still import PGN games to create
opening books with millions of positions.

It's at www.bookup.com

Information on the source code is at http://www.bookup.com/programmers.htm

How will that help Folkert make his chess program stronger?

Good question. Variants of Bookup have been used for decades to create
opening books for dedicated computers to top flight programs like HIARCS.
Once the opening is designed in Bookup, the Professional version has a PGN
exporter that is used to create either zillions of unique lines/games or one
single giant game that can usually be parsed by the playing software's
book-making function.

Or one could make the playing program read the Bookup ebooks directly.

Lets be honest, all you are doing is spamming a newsgroup.

Thanks, Dave, for your honesty. :) I'm certain you believe I am spamming a
newsgroup. There are others who believe that by responding to you I am
baiting a troll. To each his own.
