Can you name the two players sitting at the table? The two players
depicted in the pictures on the wall? The year and location of this
photograph?

Actually, two of Taubenhaus' brothers did live in New York, and played
a bit of chess, though never in masters tournaments.

Was life better in those days? Did the roast beef & gravy taste more
devine? Remember, steaming mounds of horse-dung carpeted the city
streets..

Taylor,

I believe that you you are correct on all of your answers. The only
one that had me unsure was Taubenhaus. I originally thought it was
Amos
Burn, as it looks just like him in the 1895 Hastings group picture:

However, I had already known that the picture was taken at the
Manhattan Chess Club in 1893, and the only New York tournament in
which Burn had ever participated, was in 1889 (to my limited
knowledge).

I=92m glad this one made you work a little bit ;)

Yep, I'd say this clinches it for Taubenhaus:

Aha! Found him, I think. Pillsbury's opponent is Jean Taubenhaus. He
can be seen here:

http://tinyurl.com/46kahn

in a group portrait from New York 1893, a tournament in which
Taubenhaus and Pillsbury both played. Taubenhaus is seated second from
right, between Lasker and Olly. If it's not the same guy as in your
photo, it must be his identical twin brother.

Pillsbury, smoking a cigar, is seated at left. On the wall behind
him are pictures of George Mackenzie (left) and Steinitz. The bearded
man opposite Pillsbury is not familiar to me. I would guess the
picture was taken in an American club, most likely in Boston or New
York.
