Trotsky's birth name was Lev Davidovich Bronstein. Does anyone know if he was in any way related to David Bronstein, even distantly?

A new book about Soviet chess, "White King and Red Queen" by Daniel Johnson, a London Times editor, says that David Bronstein was a second cousin to Trotsky. I do not know for sure if this is true, however.

I do not know for sure if this is true, however. I just contacted British historian Bernard Cafferty, an expert on Soviet chess. He was skeptical of Johnson's claim. He knew of no proof that Bronstein and Trotsky were closely related, and noted that they came from rather distant parts of the Russian empire. As far as being distantly related, every person on earth is distantly related to every other person. Even creationists and evolutionists agree on this. I recall reading that even the most distantly related people currently alive are probably no more distant than 50th cousins.

According to Bronstein's autobiography, the rumor was unsubstantuated but unlikely. Such a rumor may be the reason David's father was imprisoned; having the same name was clearly sufficient reason for the NKVD.
