Even as I speak Susan Polgar is en route to the event.

She is official Ambassador to the 2008 Chess Olympiad and also in
charge of all English speaking media on behalf of the organizer.

She will have a full page daily column in the biggest Dresden
newspaper.

The Grandmaster also has a nightly chess show on Dresden TV.

Paul Truong, Susan Polgar's husband, is the official photographer to
this Olympiad.

I would think there would be a question here of how he becomes on-
site. If he is paying out-of-pocket for travel, and trying to make his
money back by doing odd jobs such as photography, he might charge a
good deal. If Texas Tech or SPICE is paying for travel, he probably
cannot accept money for such jobs except to reduce the costs of the
trip for the group paying for the travel, so he would work very cheap
or for free as long as it doesn't interfere with his time. If the
organizers would pay him to come, then they are paying too much.

My guess is that he is working for free, and the title is something to
put on an activity form; he will take some pictures which will be
posted on a website. Since I have never been to an Olympiad and have
heard some strange rumors about the way some of them have worked in
the past, I am genuinely curious about what the arrangements are.

It's a known technique, less risky than outright fabrication of
credentials, for enhancing a resume. Naturally, readers will infer a
high degree of professionalism accompanies a title such as "Official
Photographer of the Olympiad".

From what I've read, they often include pasha-class accommodations for
bureaucrats and YMCA-class for the players. This may not always be
true, however.

Is it known who is paying Paul's expenses to go to Dresden? The
possibilities I see are 1) He is paying out of pocket 2) The Dresden
organizers are paying him to act as their photographer 3) Texas Tech
is paying him out of funds for academic travel 4) He is being paid by
money independently raised by SPICE from private donors.

My statement that it would be much cheaper to hire a professional
photographer would be relevant only for the second case. If he is
already there, he may well be cheaper than hiring a professional
photographer.

It's nearly always cheaper to hire an on-site amateur than a
professional.

If Innes were there, they could hire him as official chronicler, limo
driver, lift manager, or poet laureate. If he brought his ice-ax, he
could serve as security.

Asks "I am not obsessed" Sam Sloan [not really! but sounds like
Sloan!], which is a fair question indeed, and could be answered by
asking who has taken more chess photographs than anyone else?

If that is the meaning of Sam Sloan [or Sloan-Clones], then shall we
agree that he does not know the answer to it, nor says what meaning
is, to him?

Cheaper? I am sure you can always get cheaper. As for better, maybe?
Maybe not?

> Or perhaps this is simply a silly title with no
> money involved at all?

Oh I see... the matter then is not the money but... what? You see, Sam
Sloan [and Sloan-CLones] have yet again set up an argument which says,
cheaper is better, but professional is better too.

Who could argue with them on this basis, especially sincethey argue
both sides of it.

> and if they are silly enough to offer Paul money for this he has every

Look! I made a mistake. Its not the obsessed Sloan, its the idiotic
Dr. Spinrad - the person who said here that the secret Goichberg
material withheld from public [and the court's view] whatever that may
be, would be no reason, in the view of Dr. Spinrad, whatever it was,
to resign. Well, things certainly changed on the ethical and logical
fronts at Princeton since I was there.

Jerry Spinrad, PhD, has never reflected on this comment of his own to
any substantive measure, and here continues to be less than
substantive about who is more used to taking good chess photographs
than anyone else on the planet?

Who would that be, in his opinion? If good chess photos was indeed the
intent of his nebulous and gerneric [and cheap!~] criticism.

This may be all news to Jerry, who, to be fair to him, doesn't notice
much at all about who can take chess photos in a chess environment and
so asks for 'qualifications' - [ROFL] - shall we think this has
nothing to do with what people already did? Is that 'qualification' or
does Jerry think maybe a Vogue photographer would be preferable for
the chess market?

What in fact is he carping about?

Hs level of attention is arently enough to maintain his position at
chesscafe as an historical researcher of chess anecdote ['history'
some say] and which further degrades both that site and the
art&science he absolutely fails to practice.

Jerry Spinrad has claimed that he will discuss his orientation with
his critics, and having encountered that, I can only say that his
words do not reflect his deeds. They are brave words, reflecting
nothing in fact.

That he should continue to write 'history' of chess, rather than a
speculative gossip column is presumably to the taste of those who like
such stuff and who edit and publish him.

In terms of real people and their current force, he might park his
insular opinion where his attention lies.

Does Paul Truong have any particular competence that would make him a
good official photographer? Wouldn't it be much cheaper, and get much
better photos, to hire a professional photographer who lives in
Dresden for this? Or perhaps this is simply a silly title with no
money involved at all?

This is not a scandal; the organizer can spend money how s/he wants,
and if they are silly enough to offer Paul money for this he has every
right to take it. Still, it strikes me as bizarre to give this job to
someone with no obvious qualifications.

Well, he does own a moderately expensive camera - and spends a lot of
time wandering about squeezing off 5 shots at a time.
