Hmmm, still works fine for me.

I know Zep's oeuvre pretty well, but can't seem to recall a tune by
them fitting that description. Got a title?

That would be on July 19th, 1943? AFAIK, the target of that bombing
was the railroad yards, so as to hinder the transfer of troops to the
Sicilian front. One venerable church was hit, the basilica of San
Lorenzo, but nothing around the Vatican. Or was Rome bombed on other
occasions? Other than the railroad angle, I don't think Rome had much
strategic significance.
Some churches were ruined by bombing, e.g. the Church of Santa Chiara
in Naples, but perhaps a bigger danger was the German looters, who
were carting off every painting and statue they could get their hands
on. Fortunately the Sistine Chapel is rather difficult to transport.

Well, Taylor, maybe Davo-boy had something _similar_ in his eeny weeny
mind, but y'know the link you gave above is totaly defunct? on my
machine @ least & yes this Michaelangelo ceiling, depicting mankind, is
perverse in the extreme! IIRC, theres a L. Zepplin tune which covers the
anomaly - meaning you have a couple of 'ignudos' touching their fingers
together while a benign GOD sits in state. It amuses me Taylor & the
irony is that _it_ (the sistine chapel) wasn't bombed into oblivion -
circa. 1943. But, no matter, Davo-lad has now taken up his 'easyjet'
option & is scheduled over the next few days to wander Venice in his
anorak!..

I would imagine Dave had in mind something like the gentleman to the
right in this image:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:God2-Sistine_Chapel.png

As for Gandalf, while he was not the God or a god, he was a partly
divine type of being, one of the Maiar. The theology of Tolkien's
Middle Earth was a mixture of pagan polytheism and Judaeo-Christian
monotheism. Above all was The One, aka Eru Il=FAvatar, equivalent to the
Judaeo-Christian God. He created the Ainur, among whom was Melkor,
equivalent to Lucifer/Satan. After the creation of Middle Earth,
Melkor sought dominion over it in defiance of Il=FAvatar. Some of the
Ainur chose to stay in the heavenly realm, but others chose to go to
Middle Earth, where they became the Valar (guardians), and equivalent
to Greco-Roman or Norse gods such as Zeus, Odin, Poseidon, Ceres,
Vulcan etc. The Valar in turn were able to create lesser but still
partly divine beings to serve them; these were the Maiar. Among them
were Sauron, who became Melkor's chief disciple in evil and his
eventual successor as Dark Lord, and Gandalf (originally known as
Olorin), who led the effort to oppose and overthrow Sauron.

Thank you, yes.

Nah! too crass. In his heyday Fischer had rock-star good looks. Now it
seems his once great forehead has shrunken to chimpanzee proportions,
his strong & powerful nose seems to have got longer & it's hard to
discern the lines of his rugged chinny, chin, chin because of all that
disgusting food-material garnering hair growth he's allowed grow. It's
quite sad really & I definitely wouldn't vote for him..

Very good! Although for Fischer it's a bit of a demotion.

Oh, I don't know. I've always thought the guy on the front of the
Chessmaster box looks rather like either God or Gandalf.

You're being flippant Davo-boy. Clearly God & a fantasy wizard are
un-synonimous, you might just as easily add Dumbledore into the mix -
you are being a silly chappie..

I never said God and Gandalf were the same being. Just that they look
kind of similar.

Sure, why not?

You mathematicians are somewhat casual. Can you describe to us what God
looks like?..

Kinda like Gandalf and Dumbledore.
