Subject: How can I determine my rating?
I'm not member of any chess club and I consider myself to be
a beginner.
Couple of days ago I ordered my first few books about chess.

However, I have a chess program Chessmaster 10th Edition and
I listened through some lectures and did a couple of drills
and also started playing against computer opponents.
I also study openings and currently I'm waiting for my book on
endgame because a lot of people told me that studying the
endgame first is the
way to go.
I'm familiar with the basics like forks, pins, skewers,
discovered attacks and understand a bit
about pawn structures, bad and good bishops etc.

At the moment I'm rated 1526 on Chessmaster.
I was wondering how realistic is that rating?

Play a few Games at GetClub Chess and see how you score over other
players. There are arround 100 players playing at GetClub Chess. If
your rank is above 50 then you are an Average player. If your rank is
in top 10, You are very good player.

Play Chess at: http://www.GetClub.com/Chess.html

Then you can play with Zebediah, Nomorechess & Taylor kingston, Bonsai
and see if you can beat 2100 Rated players.

Now Beginner Level at GetClub plays as good as Help Bot. Yesterday
Beginner won 2/4 games played by Help Bot. So if you want to play with
a player with as much strength as Help Bot just play with Beginner
Level at GetClub Chess.

It would be more accurate to say that Sanny has
consistently claimed high numbers for his program,
and that for a long time he was way, way off. But
not anymore; now the program is a heck of a lot
tougher, and his numbers more difficult to judge.

Let me give an example: I occasionally see
players leave a piece en prise in tournaments,
where a simple Queen check will pick it off; but
now Sanny's program only rarely hangs a piece
in that way, generally misjudging the value of
spite checks and pawns versus a piece. More
often, it seems to now hang onto its men as
well as -- or better than -- most humans.

With no time limit for the human opponent, it's
not easy to say what the rating strength really
might be; let's just say that Sanny's program is
more dangerous an opponent than most humans
I've played lately, even if it still has severe
weaknesses in some areas.

Don't bother. Sanny knows nothing about chess and nothing about
ratings. The ratings on his site bear no relation to any other rating
system and Sanny consistently overestimates the strength of his
program.

HOW GOOD IS YOUR CHESS?

By GM Larry Evans ($9.95 less 20% discount) from www.cardozapub.com
contains 100 positions from actual games in a quiz format that enable
you to determine your own rating far from the hurly burly of the
tournament arena.

The trouble with books and computer estimates is that
they don't accurately relate to the actual pool of rated
chess players, and who knows what effort -- if any -- the
authors and programmers put into scaling their tests to
fit reality.

My advice to this person would be to *not* "wait" for
his endgame book to arrive, because tactics are 90%
of the game. Anyone who wants know what their chess
rating is, can simply go direct by entering a few chess
tournaments. Just remember: at first you may be
uncomfortable with score-keeping and handling of the
clock, unlike veteran tournament competitors, but that
is only a small part of the equation. Tactics will decide
the vast majority of your games.

Yes, well...most people are interested in your rating IN the burly burly
of the tournament arena.

There's a surprisingly easy way to determine your rating....I wonder if
Parr and Evans know what it is?
