Subject: Is a certain James Altucher a nationally ranked chess master? How

TheStreet.com is a financial site that has a columnist Altucher as per
the below. He claims to be a "nationally ranked" chess master, but a
review on FIDE (http://ratings.fide.com/advseek.phtml) yielded
nothing.
How can you check, at least in the USA, whether somebody is
'nationally ranked' or is that more a subjective determination?

James Altucher is president and founder of Stockpickr LLC, a wholly
owned subsidiary of TheStreet.com and part of its network of Web
properties, and a managing partner at Formula Capital, an alternative
asset management firm that runs a fund of hedge funds. He also is a
weekly columnist for the Financial Times and the author of the books
Trade Like a Hedge Fund, Trade Like Warren Buffett and SuperCa$h.
Previously, Altucher was a managing partner at technology venture
capital firm 212 Ventures and was CEO and founder of Vaultus and Reset
Inc. He holds a bachelor's degree from Cornell and was a doctoral

The USCF has an on-line database of everyone who has played since 1990
(and some others) at http://www.uschess.org/msa/Index.php. There is a
James Altucher on the list who last played in 1998 with a rating of
2204. I see no reason to doubt that it's the same guy.

The USCF web site ( http://www.uschess.org )has a link to ratings. This
individual has a rating of 2204 - but has been inactive since 1997.
