STATEMENT BY JERRY HANKEN

I have always wanted to be able to quote my favorite humorist Mark
Twain who said "Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

Anyway, I will resist the temptation to write my own obit. I simply
can't go now as I must wait at least until I play in my 50th US Open
in 2017 and then I will have to put it off until I play in my 60th
consecutive American Open in 2024. After that, I'll think of
something.

"Down you mongrel death, back into your kennel, I have stolen breath
from a reed of fennel......" -- Edna St.Vincent Millay.

Jerry Hanken finally called me back. He said that he is in heaven now.
Everything is fine but it is quite a bit warmer than he thought it
would be. He wishes that they would turn down the heat.

It reminds me of the old George Burns quip about looking for his
obituary in the newspaper each morning. If he didn't find it, he had
breakfast.

I have placed a call to Jerry Hanken and left a message that if he is
dead to call me back.

However, he has not called back so this must mean that he is alive.

It seems Dillinger has become nuttier than when I crossed swords with
him in 2003. Back then he was only defending schlock.

I met Jerry Hanken as a USCF Delegate in 1992. Hanken was always very
concerned
about Chess politics, seemingly unable to tell the difference between
reality and chess.
In the days of USCF voting members (500 or so) Hanken would travel the
country,
and meet the members themslves.

When I was 16, Hanekn drove to the ACE Chess club in Austin, Texas,
and
would laugh at USCF members, saying "You are not a voting member!"

I law saw Hanken in Cherry Hill, NJ. He remembered me.

Jerry Hanken was in real life a probation officer. He sought refuge
in Chess politics.

He tried to help Chessplayers, even loaning me money one time to play
chess
in the US Open.

He did try to help people.

Hanken had his werid traits. One time, he even would return my mail
unread, when
I was a USCF director.

Hanken represented the crazy attidue of chess politics. I never
understood him.

It's a hoax. The e-mail was not from Russ Miller; it came from "Robert
Miller," a dummy address used by a netloon named Daren Dillinger. Hey,
Larry, would you like to buy some shares in a Nigerian mustard mine?
