Something like $12,000 as I recall.

There is great gear that is very standard and non-fancy. Fischer-
Spassky '72 was just that for its time.

I think players would prefer just a standard set.

Important matches should have great gear not crap.

Wasn't the clock used in the Capablanca - Alekhine match on ebay? How
much did that go for?

I must correct myself: the score was +2 -1 =3D1 in Karpov's favor.
The miscalculation I referred to occurred in game 2. Kasparov,
White, was doing nicely (except on the clock) in this position:

W: Kh2, Qd5, Rb2, Bg2 Nh5, d4, f2, g3. h3
B: Kg7, Qa6, Rc1, Nd6, Bg6, f7, f6, h7

when suddenly he was completely flustered by Karpov's cagey
42...Be4!?. Apparently thinking that 43.Bxe4 Qf1 would lead to mate
(it doesn't), GK played 43.Qxe4?, then after 43... Nxe4 44. Nf5+ Kf8
45. Bxe4 Rc8
46. d5 Qa4 he blundered further with 47. Bf3?? Qa3 0-1

If 43.Bxe4 Qf1 White gets out of trouble with 44.Nf5+! Nxf5 45.h4
Nh6 46.Bf3. The other good alternative was 43.Qa2, but GK didn't see
that either.

Very true. I was present only for the 3rd and 4th games, so I didn't
see this one in person, but I followed it online. That night I had a
dream about the game, and woke up realizing how Kasparov could have
escaped.

The venue was a TV studio in Times Square. On one side it had
windows facing the street, and any passers-by could watch. Quite a
crowd gathered on the sidewalk. Inside, invited spectators were seated
in a semi-circle around the two players, who were on the same level,
not on a raised stage. I personally was about 20 feet from them. There
were TV monitors on which one could follow the game.

Silence was the rule.

As I said, I remember it being a fast TL, like G/20 or G/30, with
perhaps a 5 or 10-second delay.

After the second game, both Kasparov and Karpov answered questions
from the group. Most of those asking questions were chess journalists.
Susan Polgar acted as a sort of MC for the occasion.

Thanks for answering all my questions , that would have been exciting
chess to watch.

Thanks for that info , you saved me some time.

That would have been fun to watch two great GM's in person..How does
that work ?

Were they on a stage and you sitting in the audience and did they have
a large chess board on a screen that followed the moves ?

Did everyone have to be real quite or could you talk to the person
sitting next to you ?

Were these fast games , 5 min game or one or two hour games ? Each
person gets one hour for example...

After the games were over did they just leave right away or did they
talk to the crowd or take any questions from the crowd ?

Just wondeing how something like that works.

Thank you.

Wow that bishop move that Karpov made , i just played it out ..I mite
have done the same thing if i was Kasp...

It is not checkmate on the next queen move but with the queen and rook
on row one it would be soon ..i should set it back up and see what mite
happen if he takes the bishop for bishop.

With his time clock running down Kasp did not have time to evaluate the
situation..

The asking price is especially surprising, considering that this was
not at all a title match. It was just a 4-game rapid exhibition, with
a TL of G/20 or thereabouts, if I recall correctly. The main point of
it was to promote a new 3-D goggle gimmick.
As I recall, Karpov won the match +1 =3D3 by capitalizing on a serious
miscalculation by GK in one game. I was there in NY for games 3 and 4,
and found it surprising how much anti-Kasparov, pro-Karpov sentiment
there was among the spectators.

After you destroyed BB in the grudge match,
it should come as no surprise when he, in
turn, ruins your life by getting you banned from
ebay.

one of those Capablanca ebony/rosewood sets from Chess & bridge Ltd.

It is too bad that Bill Brock got me suspended from ebay, so I cannot
make the minimum bid of $15,000.

So sad, and I wanted that chess set so much.
