My Plans to Create Videos Promoting Scholastic Chess
Until now, the USCF involvement in scholastic chess has consisted of
collecting money from the kiddies. The USCF has done almost nothing to
actively promote scholastic chess other than recently launching the
excellent publication Chess Life for Kids and holding four major
national scholastic championships every spring.
Most of the credit for the actual work promoting scholastic chess
belongs to the chess coaches and chess teachers around the country.
They get their students to join the USCF mainly because of the
benefits of the rating system.
I propose to change all that and to have the USCF actively promote
scholastic chess and become the leader and not just the dues
collector.
The way I propose for the USCF to start doing that is to create a
promotional video promoting our national scholastic championships.
We have a great product. Every year we have as many as 4,000 screaming
kids all in the same room together and all playing chess. Why not make
a video about that? If we did it right, we could have not four
thousand but twenty thousand kids in that room. (Of course, then Carol
Jarecki might have to hire a few assistant directors to manage them.)
I propose to have a DVD made and then broadcast it on www.youtube.com
. As any parent will tell you, the majority of our nations youths get
their news from youtube.
We could also get it played on the 7:00 oclock nightly news, in
infomercials and elsewhere.
I make and sell chess DVDs and I use a company that makes them for
$1.35 each. On a large scale, the cost can go down to less than fifty
cents per DVD. We can easily afford to mail one to every scholastic
coach in the country and to every school with a chess program in the
country.
Why has not this been done already, you ask?
Actually, I proposed this at the November 17-18, 2006 meeting of the
USCF Executive Board in Stamford, Connecticut. I made a motion that
the USCF purchase a camcorder at an estimated cost of $2,000 to $2,500
and use it to videotape and broadcast national scholastic
championships, executive board meetings and other events.
Unfortunately, nothing came of my proposal. The Executive Director was
supposed to look into it (not that there is anything to look into).
The same thing has happened as has happened with everything else that
the Executive Director was supposed to do, which is nothing.
Rather than doing something to promote scholastic chess, the current
board majority would rather discuss having another winter retreat in
which the entire board would be flown to Florida again at membership
expense. The retreat idea has been brought up at every board meeting
that I have attended and I have had to shoot it down every time. No
doubt this explains why the crusty curmudgeons who control the board
majority are spending so much time and money trying to have me
defeated for re-election, so that they can start flying to Florida
again at membership expense.
I am hoping that the current election will bring in forward looking
board members who are able to see the obvious merit to producing a
video promoting our national scholastic championships.

answer our preguntas? Are they fabricated? Are they full of mentiras?
I am not a medical dor se=F1or Sloan, but maybe you need to see a
physciatrist . Some of your posts lead me to believe that you are loco
en la cabeza. I kindly asked you to justify the thread you created
regarding Pinochios nariz, and to date you have not replied. Que
lastima!
On a serious note se=F1or Sloan, take my advice and see a physciatrist.
La gente do not want a chess leader who may be suffering from
schizophrenia. If this is the case, get some rest and do the "gente" a
favor by dropping out of the USCF elections.

Sam, the retreat idea has NOT been proposed at ANY board meeting you
have attended, so you have not been able to shoot it down even once.
Regarding "Flying to Florida at membership expense," please note that
even though the board has two Florida members, we have met only once
in Florida during our two years, and that was in the May off season
when hotel rates are low. At that meeting neither Channing, Schultz
nor Goichberg claimed any airfare expense (I have claimed no travel
expense for any travel as President).

I am hoping that the current election will bring in board members
whose posts at least faintly resemble truth, rather than being total
fantasy.

In the eleven months since I took office office on the board in August
2006, I have had to endure in relative silence false and misleading
statement after false and misleading statement by Bill Goichberg.
However, this one goes too far.
Take a look at the agenda of every board meeting since I was elected.
You will find the word RETREAT there every time.
Joel Channing is always talking about having another retreat. Just
because no board member has had the courage to openly propose another
trip to Florida does not mean it would not happen if I were not there.
Otherwise, why is the word RETREAT in every agenda?
The so-called "Retreat" to Florida in May 2006, just three months
before I took office, was not a mere board meeting. It was an all
expenses paid trip to Florida by the entire USCF-insider group, all
paid for with YOUR MEMBERSHIP DUES !!!

Quite an impressive group. Remember that everybody in that picture is
spending your dues money, flying to Florida and staying in hotels at
YOUR EXPENSE !!!
Then, Bill Goichberg goes on to say:
"Channing, Schultz nor Goichberg claimed any airfare expense (I have
claimed no travel expense for any travel as President)."
However, what about all the other people in the picture? True, Schultz
and Channing did not claim any airfare expense since they live in
Florida and did not need to fly.
What many people do not realize about Bill Goichberg is that he plays
the horses and flies around the country not only to organize chess
tournaments but also to go to various race tracks during horse racing
season. This retreat was scheduled to be held when Bill Goichberg was
in Florida anyway attending the race track, and thus he was not really
giving the USCF a break by not charging the USCF any airfare.
I make no predictions about the forthcoming election. Any of the
candidates have a chance to win, in my view. However, I am almost
certain that regardless of who wins, Bill Goichberg will not be given
another two years as USCF President. He has not done a good job and
somebody else, almost anybody else, should be given the chance.

Because the idea of 4000 screaming kids in one room together sounds like
Dante's fifth level of hell.
