Alice in Wonderland made simple for kids

Adopted from the original by Lewis Carroll

and with all of the Original Drawings by John Tenniel

Alice in Wonderland was originally a story told to three little girls
aged 8 to 13 during a boat ride in 1865. One of the little girls was
named Alice. She asked the story-teller to write it down and later on
he did. Eventually, it was published and immediately it became a great
sensation.

However, the story is complex and difficult to follow. Few children
can read and understand it, especially since it is filled with
puzzles, riddles and logical problems. Most of the time, Mothers read
it to their daughters. Adults read and study it as well. There are
even political aspects to the story, as some of the characters were
drawn to resemble British officials in power at the time. For example,
"Bill the Lizard" is suspected of being a caricature of the British
Prime Minister in office at the time.

The author here has a six-year-old daughter who likes to look at the
pictures of Alice and her friends but can read few of the words.
Therefore, the original work has been rewritten in short simple words
and sentences that a child aged 6 to 10 should be able to read.

At the same time, the story line of the original has been followed
faithfully. All of the original characters are still here. All of the
42 drawings in the original work are used.

The length has been greatly reduced mostly by reducing the lengthy
dialogues. Yet, the flavor of the conversations has been preserved.

It is hoped that even adults will find this book useful, as the
original work is a difficult read requiring many hours of study and
concentration. Here, an adult can read this in a few minutes and turn
to the original for the parts that seem most interesting.

This is a simplified version of the original classic "Alice in
Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll so that kids aged 6-10 may be able to
read it by themselves without help from their parents.

The original story has been completely re-written in small words and
simple sentences, but all of the stories and characters have been
preserved and all of the original drawings are used.

The original Alice in Wonderland is too difficult for children to read
so parents usually read it to them. This volume solves that problem.

It is in very large 24 point type to make for easy reading by small
children and the elderly. The original drawings are all blown up to 8
x 10 size suitable for a children's coloring book.

I understand that you are being sarcastic but that gives me a chance
to have address a point others have been making.

If you ask the average man of woman on the street whether they have
ever read "Alice in Wonderland" almost everybody will tell you that
they have.

However, I wager that not 1 in 100 of the people who tell you that
they have read it have actually read it.

They may have seen the Walt Disney movie of a cartoon coloring book
but they have not read the actual book.

I have re-written and published "Alice in Wonderland Made Simple for
Kids" for one reason only which is to help my own daughter, Sandra,
aged 6, learn how to read.

My daughter is a slow reader. She is last in her First Grade Class.

I was a slow reader when I was her age too. The first book I ever read
when I was a small child was not "Fun with Dick and Jane". It was
"Chess for Fun and Chess for Blood" by Edward Lasker. That was because
I had taken an interest in chess and that interest propelled me into
reading it.

My daughter Sandra really likes Alice. She talks about Alice all the
time. For a while I thought that Alice was the name of another kid in
her first grade class. Finally, I realized that Alice was the Alice of
"Alice in Wonderland". She was especially attracted to the drawings of
Alice by Arthur Rackham. Now, she plays the DVD Version "Classic
Fables: Alice in Wonderland" several times a day when she gets home
from school. She likes it much better than the DVD version. I am
hoping that my simplified version of Alice in Wonderland will help her
start reading.

Yes indeed, having to waste time reding to your children - THERE'S
a problem that needs a solution!

Alice in Wonderland is only difficult for children to read when their
parents don't care enough to work with them, and instead purchase for them
an abbreviated version "For Dummies".

This is the precise problem with education today. Instead of working with
our kids to bring their intellectual level UP to a point of understanding on
such classics, we instead dumb it down, and take most of the intricate
interactions and delete them.

By the way, some interesting facts about Lewis Carrol: He loved making
friends with young girls. He'd write to them, more often than not employing
them in vague, abstract ways to serve as his muse. This "girl habit"
flourished to include taking nude photographs of them, though interestingly
enough never without their parents present. But when Carroll's gal pals
reached a certain age, they were discarded. He would simply stop writing
them letters, enlisting their services, or caring about their opinions.

Why do you ask that? Have you actually read "Alice in Wonderland". I
mean, the Original, not the Walt Disney version, or the one hundred
other books that have been written about it.

I have been re-reading and re-reading it because I have been writing a
book about it and every time I read it I find something new.

For example, some of the characters resemble British politicians in
office at the time. For example, "The Sheep" and "Bill the Lizard". I
am wondering what Queen Victoria really thought about this book. Is
not there some resemblance between the King and Queen of Hearts and
Queen Victoria and her nebbish husband Prince Albert?

So, my answer is: I am not putting you on. The original "Alice in
Wonderland" is far too difficult for my daughter to read. So, I have
written this simplified version so that she can read it.

She may also find Dostoyevski's _The Brothers Karamazov_ too difficult to
read right now. Perhaps you should do a simplified version of that? :)

Seriously, though, I would suspect you could make a case for just waiting
until the reader is old enough to appreciate the original _Alice_. That
way she could read it as Carroll intended. Your own post notes that, when
you were "re-reading and re-reading it [...] every time [you] find
something new". I would suggest this is part of the magic of many a good
book. Did you consider that, by simplifying the text, you might drain it
of much of that magic?

...And if I may address a simpler subject, what the _hell's_ with the
cross-posting? Soc.culture.usa and alt.fan.harry-potter are tenuous
enough for being even remotely on topic as it is, but why all the chess
newsgroups? I half expect this to show up next on alt.playing-cards,
rec.pets.rabbits and alt.ensign.wesley.die.die.die next. :( I suspect
deep in my heart that, rather than create a wonderful ket of interested
readers with this, you have instead created a large group of people who
would like nothing better than to never hear about you or your book ever,
ever, EVER again.

Please consider whether this was a wise move.

LOL! _Now_ she tells me!!

My daughters learned a lot of English from Christmas songs. I'll have to
check and see if the brillig German translation works. IIRC, it was also
in The Annotated Alice.
