Subject: '[Philippines] can't help Fischer, says immigration official'
[If the will was there, the Philippines could offer Fischer asylum, and
if necessary he could board a Filipino aircraft in Japan, or get into a
Filipino diplomatic vehicle at the gates of the detention centre, or go
into the 'custody' of a Filipino diplomat before walking out of his
cell. These are what diplomats calls 'modalities' -banana note]

RP can’t help Fischer, says immigration official

Updated 06:00pm (Mla time) Aug 16, 2004

Inquirer News Service

THE BUREAU of Immigration admitted on Monday that it could not help
American chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer detained in Japan amid a
request that he be granted asylum in the Philippines where his Filipina
wife and child are staying.

In an interview with reporters, Immigration Commissioner Alipio
Fernandez said Fischer, who had been held by Japanese authorities after
allegedly trying to use canceled travel documents, had to enter the
Philippines first before the government could act on his case.

Fernandez said Fischer, married to a Filipina, could apply for temporary
residency once he arrives in the country.

But since Fischer’s travel documents were canceled and he could not
travel, the problem remained, Fernandez said.

Officials at the Narita International Airport in Japan detained Fischer
last June 16 for using a canceled US passport.

He is wanted by US authorities for allegedly violating sanctions against
Yugoslavia where he played a match against archrival Russian Boris
Spassky in 1992.

Filipino chess grandmaster Eugene Torre has asked President Macapagal-
Arroyo to grant Fischer asylum in the Philippines where he has been
living for several years.

If Fischer is married to a Filipina as this article says, how can he marry
another woman in Japan as he is trying to do?

As Cardinal Sin, the Catholic Arch-Bishop of the Philippines, once
said:

"If a man has two wives he is a bigamist.

"If a man has three wives he is a polygamist.

"If a man has only one wife he is a monotonist."

This is permitted by the law if symmetry: Japana is also married
already. She is one of Sam Sloan's wives.

Paging the Reverand Sam Sloan Esquire: we need your explanations of
the legal and religious issues here...

Thankyou,

W.H. King
