Really Learn Spanish by Joe Tago is out !!

The much awaited book, "Really Learn Spanish", has just been published
by Ishi Press International.

This book goes far beyond any previous Spanish Language textbook
because it includes colloquialism, slang, dirty words, and abuses as
spoken in different countries across the vast Spanish Language
Speaking World.

This book is intended for those who think they already know Spanish
but still cannot understand what two native speakers of Spanish are
saying to each other.

At 410 pages, this book probably goes deeper into the language than
any previous book on the subject.

To order, send $34, cash, check or money order, to Joe Tago at

Joseph Tago

The book may also be ordered from Amazon and other online bookstores.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Joe Tago is a native born American whose grandfather was born in
Spain. For than 20 years, he worked in foreign language schools
teaching English to Spanish speakers and Spanish to English speakers.

He came to write this book after his former girlfriend moved Costa
Rica and he decided to send her lessons on how to learn Spanish.

Tago is far better known in the worlds of chess, go and other
games. He is a familiar figure on the New York chess scene. In 1956,
he played two tournament chess games against Bobby Fischer, when both
were about the same age. One of the games reached a dead drawn
position until Tago suffered a hallucination, blundered and lost.
Fischer has often been known to comment on the tremendous strength of
Tago. Tago is noted for beating Fischer's closest friend, Jackie
Beers.

In 1976, Tago won the shall Chess Club Championship, virtually
sweeping an all-master field and beating Grandmaster Andy Soltis in
the decisive game. The games have all been published.

At go, Tago was for many years one of the two or three strongest
native born Americans in the world, and possibly is the strongest
American who never went to the Orient to study go.

Tago is now retired and resides in Flushing, Queens, New York.

Thank you and Joe thanks you.

You would be doing Joe a tremendous favor if you would post your
review of his book on Amazon at
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/092389179X

Reviews are tremendously important, I have found from experience. A
good review can make a book a great success and one bad review can
destroy a book.

Right. In August 2004 Tago was hospitalized and his left leg was
amputated. He has been in a nursing home ever since.

Being in a nursing home is what gave him time to work on his book. In
August 2004, I wrote on this group, "The book is just about ready for
publication, but has not been published yet".

As it turned out, Tago drove me crazy by making endless corrections
and changes, so the book did not come out for another three years.
Now, Tago wants me to pull the book back from the printer to make
some more extremely minor, trivial changes. He wants a smaller font on
page 3. I have refused. Three years is enough. It is time for him to
start another project.

The result, however, is a really great book and a great contribution
to the language and to those who study it.

When I ordered this book from Amazon, I didn't have particularly high
expectations. But now that I have it, I'm enjoying it immensely. It's
like getting several informal Spanish lessons from an urbane and witty
dinner companion.

Sam, please pass my compliments on to Joe. He and I had a couple of
brief conversations in the Game Room around 1980, but unless he has a
Brandwein-like memory, he probably wouldn't remember me.

The book is available right now on Amazon, today:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/092389179X

The book is really excellent. Tago is an old friend and I promised
to publish it two years ago before he wrote it, as a favor not
thinking much would come of it, but it turns out that the book is
really great, possibly the best book of its kind ever written.

Right, but if you're looking for a reason to chide Sam for cross-
posting, it would be easy to find a thousand examples better than this
one.

This announcement actually caught my eye because I remember Joe
Tago from occasional visits to the Flea House in the 60s. I last
saw him about 25 years ago and I was happy to hear that he's still
with us and writing. I'll probably order the book if and when it shows
up on Amazon. I could use a Spanish refresher course, though not
necessarily the kind that will get me thrown out of bars...

A valid point. Somebody else already wrote me that before my email, he
thought that Tago's book was about the Ruy Lopez, since Tago is
a chess master and "The Spanish" is an alternate name for the "Ruy
Lopez" chess opening.
