Subject: Regence set.
As a Francophile, and a bit down in the pocketbook due to recession, a
month ago I found a decent affordable historical French pattern
reproduction set over at the Chess Store.

Not up to the quality of my HOS Collectors, but decent. Different
looking but pretty authentic and pleasing overall. Looks good on 2"
squares.

Putting 'Regence' into the TCS site search engine didn't find it,
but....

What I dislike about them is that apart from the knights all the
pieces are so obviously turned on a lathe, giving a very rustic
effect. These sets are a hundred bucks, reduced from $150. For that
kind of mazoomeronians I would rather save up a few months and get a
really cracking Staunton set.
Seeing sets like this reminds me of Holden Caulfield.
Imagine some chess-loving kid getting that regency chess set for his
birthday. He would never use it. He would use a Staunton pattern one.
And every time he saw the regency one he'd think of his mum asking
about a million stupid questions about the set....

From a practical standpoint, I've never cared much for the French
Regency designs from the 18th to early 19th centuries. The king,
queen, bishop and pawn all look basically alike. A well-crafted set in
this style is pretty to look at, but not much good for actual play.
