Does anyone know who has actually signed up for the woman's championship? Can they say where they get their information, so I can cite it, and add any other pertinent information that would be of interest to the chess public. USCF are apparently organising it, but have been silent for 3 months of asking. I even received an inquiry asking where to send a contribution to the brilliancy prize, and had to reply I didn't have a clue. Phil Innes

So far, two USCF affiliates have replied, Ken Sloan and Eric Johnson - and offer the usual reward to any inquiry about chess playing - even though money is being offered to boost the prize fund. Seems like Sam Sloan is too busy with 'other matters' or maybe he doesn't have a clue either. The Lady in question did call the office, and got the run around, since they too, didn't have a clue. Have you tried contacting the USCF? Regards, John

Yes John. In fact the donor called and there was some confusion about a contact person at USCF - and in the end, since there apparently was no contact person, she left her name, number, and after no-one called back, she then wrote my column to ask if I knew anything. I have been asking for a couple of months. There is a list of qualified persons to enter, but no list I can find of those who have signed up. I don't know if the donor is still interested, I presume so... and even though it was not a great deal of money, I wonder if others had tried to make a contribution what would have happened? Of the playing population in the US, 7% are women. I wonder why? Cordially, Phil Innes > Regards, > John >
