When I first saw the film I was constantly waiting for the black guy
to turn psychic and have healing powers. I think I may have been
thinking of the wrong film.

I am sure that King did have chess in mind. The A-D game is well-known
even outside of chess circles. It appears, for example, in Georges
Perec's La Vie Mode d'emploi.
Did Kinh mean that Andy is part of some Immortal Game?
I don't know...I'm just a Caveman.

I beg to differ; I like that movie very much.

<g > Very good. I wonder if Stephen King, author of the story on
which the film is based, intended it that way. Chess figures
prominently in the film, with the main character, played by Tim
Robbins, making a chess set out of stone to pass away the time in
prison.
There's also a conversation about chess between Robbins and Morgan
Freeman. They're playing checkers, and Freeman says "King me!" Robbins
replies "Chess =97 now there's a game of kings. Civilized,
strategic ..." Freeman shoots back "And a total f---ing mystery! I
hate it!"

In the Shawshank Redemption, a film that I always thought was a piece
of poo, the name of the hero is Andy Dufresne.
Most people probably think his first name is Andrew, but we chess
players would know that his first name is Anderssen.

One Bond movie, "From Russia with Love," had a villain named
Krylenko, besides of course incorporating the end of a famous game
between Spassky and Bronstein. Did Ian Fleming use any other chess-
related Russian names in his books?

Vugar Gashimov is SUCH a fantastic name! It really sounds like a Bond
villain

Also the first name is so close to being Vulgar, and the last name is
a gnat's codpiece away from being Asimov, as in Isaac Asimov. Isaac
was the brother of Ishmael.

In fact I think I'll call him Ismell Vulgar Gass-Imoff!!

Works for me!
