Hello,

Do you think that Kamsky is playing chess again because Kasparov
retired from chess? I read some books and journals and those two did
not seem to like each other during the early and mid nineties.

Also why is Kamsky not playing any of the main lines like he used to
play in the mid 90s. These days he is playing a lot of sidelines in
the Sicilian. For example as white, he is playing: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6
3.d4 cxd4 4 Qxd4 Nc6 5.Bb5 . He seems to be avoiding the mainlines.
This guy is a 2700+ rated player; why is he so scared of playing main
lines against other GMs? He did not have very much trouble beating the
top players several years ago.

No.

Because he hasn't studied chess in the years he retired and theory has
progressed a lot since his days. So it is logical that he plays some lesser
known sidelines until he catches up with the improvements in the main lines.

Makes sense.

Simple answer: no. Kamsky's first tournament after his break was the US
Championship in November 2004. Kasparov didn't retire until February 2005
and nobody knew it was going to happen until it did.

Kamsky have played in round 1 a Sicilian Pelikan with white.
Maybe the main "main line" nowdays.

I think he wanted to finish his education first (now he's a doctor and/or
attorney) before coming back.

As for his repertoire, he probably doesn't want to tip his real repertoire
to the rest of the world until he plays again for the world title. Also,
the top computers don't play main lines because they are so superior in the
rest of the game that they don't have to. Perhaps Kamsky is taking a page
from their approach.

This is all very well as an argument but it would also mean that he had
less practice with his ``best'' lines.
