Subject: This is hilarious chess!
Here is a post I have found on the FIDE forum:

////////////////////////////

"Hello,

I am relatively new to learning "book" openings, although I've
played chess for many years. One opening recommended on a DVD I have is
the Guioco Piano - which is what I am trying to learn now.

I have a book that covers this opening (amongst others). However, when
I try to play the opening either online or against a computer chess
program, my opponent often replies with something other than 1. ... e5.
(or other replies in following moves that don't match the book's
instructions).

Does this mean I need to learn another opening (and a different one for
each alternative reply by black)? Or, is there a way to keep learning
and playing the Guioco Piano even if the opponent keeps making replies
not in my book?

Sorry if this is confusing. This is exactly why I haven't learned
"book" openings before, since this is what happened the last time I
tried (opponents make moves not in my book). Therefore, I go back to
just playing whatever move seems best at the time and fits my plan.

Thank you very much.

Bill"

No, I didn't invent this post. It's for real. And the author claims
that he has "played chess for many years".

I think his question "Does this mean I need to learn another opening?"
is a true classic.

FYI:

Being an Open Game opening, Guioco Piano starts with

1. e4 e5

(followed by

2. Nf3, Nc6
3. Bc4, Bc5)

Politicians aren't that dumb. They generally play dumb so that the average
person can relate to them.

What, you mean by doing things like pretending they didn't know there
was a disaster in New Orleans for 4 days when everyone else in the
country knows about it? Do they need to play *that* dumb? I mean,
there's "I screw up my verb tenses occasionally" dumb and there's "I'm
functionally retarded" dumb.

The only thing curious about this rogue is how he escaped Darwin's
clutches, by his very existence.
