And once again: at FICS (freechess.org), tournaments are free. You can
also go to teamchess.org to sign up for free team league play on FICS
at slow time control (45 45). There are even free GM lectures and
realtime viewing of major GM tournament games. For instance, they've
been showing the Corus games this week.

I've never tried ChessColony, but I can't imagine any feature they
have, free or with paid membership, that I don't get for free at FICS.
Feel free to enlighten me, but since the original poster was looking
for free sites, that would technically be off-topic.

The only thing FICS is missing, which you pretty much have to go to the
pay site ICC for, is large numbers of high level masters showing up
regularly. FICS has a few masters logged on sporadically, but ICC is
THE place on the internet for watching IM and GM blitz games pretty
much any time you want. For that reason alone, ICC is worth the price
of admission for players who are nearing master level and are trying to
improve. For those of us who aren't that high level (yet?), there's no
reason to go anywhere but FICS.

ChessColony is free, but if you want, you can pay $30/yr to get a
premium subscription and enter competitions like the league. It's great!

At $90/yr to get full feature service. Doesn't seem to free to me.
I'll stay with FICS.
