Subject: Where do I stand in chess ?
Hello,

I am 36 yrs old and after a break of 15 years I started to play chess again.
I have the program HIARCS 10 and play often blitz on playchess. By playing
blitz, I dont have impression my playing strenght is improving and my ELO
swings from 850 to 1250 and back depending on the day.

In order to improve a litte bit I started to train on tactics and play
slower games which I like much more because it is less intuitive than blitz.

Today I played a serious game (70' 5") agains a chess engine called Nero
6.1. I know my position has been ruined by my last move wich was a blunder,
but during this game I was performing the best I could.

I would be glad if somebody have a look at this game and if he can tell me
how much of a beginner I am. I mean, do I play like a typical beginner or
are there already some signs of more intermediate play ? I am also curious
of my style which can be important later for opening choises. Now I do not
have knowledge about chess openings.

I analysed the game already with HIARCS so I do know where are my mistakes
but I still ask myself how my play can be catalogized.

I should be very glad to have an idea of this because now, I dont have an
idea at all...

Thanks a lot !

regards

Siegfried

70 minutes for what? game? Did Nero 6.1 also get 70 minutes? I
assume that "5" is some sort of increment per move, right?

Seventy minutes on the clock at the start, plus 5s per move made.

I would recommend that you stand nowhere.
Instead, I would recommend that you sit down while
playing chess because it conserves your energy. :-)

How much chess had you played before your 'break of 15 years'?

I would not recommend that you play too much blitz.
Blitz games tend to be superficial and may encourage some bad habits.

Blitz ratings often seem volatile, though your 400 point 'swing'
seems unusually large if your rating's well-established.

I do not recommend that novice players use time controls
that they find too uncomfortably fast.

Siegfried, if you introduced yourself into a chess club and played
that game as your first game, then I would conclude that you had
some previous experience of chess. I noticed 'some signs of more
intermediate play' insofar as you showed some understanding of
general principles and played many plausible moves.

I would not recommend that you play your opening against a computer.
The computer would accept your gambit and defend well tactically.
It seems quite unlikely that you would know how to gain enough
compensation for the sacrificed pawn.

Siegfried, assuming that you have moderate talent, I believe
that you could become an intermediate club player in a fairly
short time given sufficient study and competitive experience.

I have noticed that some players post games in RGCA
and imagine that they are playing far better than they are.
In contrast, Siegfried's attitude seems refreshingly modest
and realistic.

To be fair, your position was substantially worse - probably losing -
before the blunder. After cxb3, black's queenside connected passed pawns
are a substantial positional asset for which your protected, passed
d-pawn is inadequate compensation.

While the endgame after cxb3 was poorly played by both sides, with you
missing a variety of opportunities to make life hard on black, and black
returning the favor by repeatedly giving you chances to equalize.

"Beginner" and "Intermediate" are very vague terms. I think you clearly
have a lot to learn but you also are playing chess with all your pieces,
and you manage to avoiding a gross blunder until move 39 against a
computer - so that probably means you're not a rank beginner, at least.
