That is correct, though I'm not sure exactly which version of Fritz
he'll be playing -- the press release[1] just says `Deep Fritz'. But
he also played against Fritz in Bahrain in October 2002.

No. There have been many more since then. Off the top of my head,
Kasparov has played against Junior and Fritz, Kramnik has played
Fritz, Adams has played Hydra and there have been annual
man-vs-machine Scheveningen tournaments in Bilbao, with a variety of
GMs against Fritz, Junior and Hydra. Google is your friend.

Start with one game that you consider to be perfectly played for both sides
for as deep into the opening as possible.

Leko's Pelikan Sicilians or Kasparov's English openings, or the K-K
Gruenfelds from the 1980s would be a very good place to start.

Try the "wayback machine" for some of Morphy's games to get a feel for the
theory of the 19th century if you want a historical perspective. Back then,
the Pelikan was thought to be unsound because it created a hole on d6.
Until about 30 years ago, 6. Be3 against the Najdorf Sicilian was also but a
footnote.

Start with the world championship matches and work your way down.

A simple internet search will work wonders in finding the games.

I used about three million games to build my current opening book, paring it
down just to see what was played, and then modifying it based on what I
played and which ideas I thought were strongest.
