Subject: [ANN] New version of Scid (chess database)
Hi,

I released a new version of Scid (a chess database program) at
http://prolinux.free.fr/scid/
Since my last annoucement here, I added more than 20.000 exercises (most
mates in N moves, all generated by myself from real games) and native
UCI engine support.

Enhancements from original Scid are detailed here :
http://prolinux.free.fr/scid/scid_newfeatures.html

In sumy, the changes made to original Scid are :

* Crafty, Phalanx and Toga are three chess engines embedded in the
distribution;
* Play against an opponent with a simulated ELO rate (between 1200
and 2200) and optionaly using major opening lines;
* Automatic game annotation to find blunders
* Enter kers (colored squares and arrows) directly on the board
with mouse clicks
* Opening trainer using user's repertoire
* Tactical training (more than 20 000 exercises)
* Display of multiple variations during analysis (display the
N-best lines)
* UCI engine support

another consideration. i like the window that starts when you get a
variation, but i think it's quite unconfortable, because it stops the
possibility to check directly (in the principal window) on the
variation you want to see. More precisely, you can click on the
variation #1, but not on the main line (variation #0). am i wrong?
thanks a lot. Pier Paolo

You're right, the variations window is a modal one (you can have it
disappear by pressing Escape).
I think it is really usable like this, and more over it is exactly how
works Chessbase (so people used to Chessbase will keep their habits).

Do you really think that when there is a variation, it is preferable to
choose lines in PGN window ? (I suppose that is what you meant by
"...check directly..."). The popup window I made is far more readable
for me, but comments are welcome.
This variations window is designed to be used only with arrow keys (the
four are used, see manual), so I don't understand your statement about
clicking : no mouse input are taken into consideration here.

Well it works for me. Can you try to uninstall all previous versions,
reinstall the latest one ?

For me when double clicking on PGN or si3 files, it works. To you get
Scid in the "open with" menu after a right click on a file ?

i think this the only real problem of the software: it's too useful to
click on a file to open the file.

I think pgnscid.exe functionality should be integrated in the Scid Main Gui
to use it by button-click.
One often has to transform pgn.files to La tex format. Ain't it easy to
integrate it ?

pgnscid.exe is a command line prog that is released with Scid (even on
windows). Either you use command line, or Scid UI. All what pgnscid.exe
does is to convert pgn format to Scid one. This is easily done in Scid's
UI, so I don't understand what you mean.

I don't know how to do it in Scid's UI

This is a 2 steps process :
- create a new base;
- import a PGN file

So :
- File - > New (enter a name)
- Tools - > import File of PGN games

And you have a base full of the games contained in the PGN file (check
with windows- > game list).

I appreciated very much the RMB function, but you know: people are a
creature of habit very often!!! :-)

i hope that you will have time enough to work on the compatibility
with DGT board, if you want, you can find information on http://
www.dgtprojects.com/develop.htm

i can't believe that arena can connect the electronic board and my
favourite software can't.

Another information for you: i'm testing scid with a database of 3,5 M
games (500 MB large) and it works perfectly. It's a great trainer for
openings...

Pascal, many thanks.

There's no point trying to write an interface to hardware you don't
own because there's no way you can debug your code. Anyone who has
ever written any code will appreciate that the first attempt never
works.

oh i forgot, in scid right click of the mouse = come back one move.
dosesn't it workin scid-pg?

many thanks.

I removed intentionaly the binding of the right mouse button (RMB) because:
- if at end of a line, the last move will be erased with no way to undo
this (what happens if this is a mistake and you can't remember the move
for replay ?)
- if an user wants to add a ker (red colored square), he will have to
press Shift + RMB. If he's not careful enough he may not press Shift at
the right time, and then trigger a "move back + optional erase" command,
which I found dangerous (it happened to me).

What do you think of that ? Maybe I should add an other binding (x key
for example) that will have the same effect as former RMB ? Note that
CTRL+DEL and CTRL+BACKSPACE already work.

(but also .si3 files) with scid-pg. Before i installed your version, i
