Hi all,

Looking for the 'best' (strongest, best-looking 'pieces') hand-held
chess computer. Requirements are electronic board and piece display,
minimum 2000 ELO playing strength. So far, I have found:

Deluxe Talking Touch Chess
Model No.
404D
Our Price:
$99.95

http://www.excaliburelectronics.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=EXC2&Product_Code=404D&Category_Code=ECHESS&Product_Count=9

as the best.

Any suggestions, post them here.

Thanks In Advance,
k

Like someone else said, I'd buy a PDA, not a chess computer. Things you
can do on a PDA that I doubt you can do on a chess computer

1) View PGN files
2) Edit PGN files
3) Add variations.
4) Download games (assuming you have a WiFi or similar Internet connection)

Plus of course all the usual PDA functions.

I'd personally look for Pocket PC, rather than the Palm someone else
suggested, since its a much more popular platform, so more software.

I''ve owned three PocketPC devices and I have not been satisfied with any of
them. I keep expecting them to get better and they do in certain aspects --
memory and memory management, for example. But they're still large, clunky,
and expensive. Someone else neglected to mention that they are much more
expensive than Palm, buggier, less stable, and their software is pricier.
Also, I'm not sure that someone else was right when he wrote that PocketPC
is more popular than Palm. That was certainly not true 3-4 years ago.

As for downloading PGN files, which someone else also mentioned, you'd need
to be connected to the Internet through Wi-Fi, which the Windows devices are
much better at. Palm is still well behind in this area. However, even with a
wireless network at home chances are you'd bluetooth in or sync files rather
than download them from the net.

I'll warn you: the graphics on those gizmos are absolutely horrible. You're
better off purchasing an inexpensive or used PalmOne device and buying a
cheap chess playing program. You'll have a much stronger opponent, plus a
PDA.
