You should practice tactics and try some of those position/puzzle exercises, but you should also play a lot so you can try out the ideas that you learn. A computer is a good partner that will play anytime you want. Try using Scid/Crafty for analysis of your games. You may want to pick a GM, get a book on his games, preferably one that has analysis by himself or another GM and review the games to learn. -matt

Thanks. http://www.exeterchessclub.org.uk/ http://www.exeterchessclub.org.uk/coaching.html The site also has a coaching links section. I must declare an interest as a member of ECC, but Dr Dave did all the hard work. The colour choice isn't so different from bits of his wardrobe, in case you were wondering about the sites design, but he is thorough in his writing, although I'd check his analysis (he's not that much better than me, and I don't trust my analysis either).

Ok, I'm running an Apple Mac iBook, so I'm looking for online stuff more. Or any mac applications, they would do, of course. Cheaper is better. Thanks!

Any links will be appreciated! Thanks. Chessmaster 9 and chessmaster 10 have some excellent tutorials on all aspects of play at various levels. For tactical training (which should be the first priority for any player below 1800), get CT ART 3.0 and Personal Chess Trainer. Henri
