Subject: Chessmaster 9000 Bug?

I can't get labels on some of the buttons.
They are blank -- no text -- even Yes & No.
Anyone else have this problem?

Well, I know that we wrote code that would require a check about every
two weeks or one dozen sessions, but I'm pretty sure that Ubi Soft
added their own checking code on top of that that required the CD all
the time. So, I would assume that the CD is always required.

No idea. I would check the Chessmaster Forums and customer support.
Just go to www.chessmaster.com and click on "Community" and then
"Forum". You should be able to find out everything you're looking for
there.

You wrote the code for CD 9000? Terrific!
Yes I had to put disk #1 in after about a dozen plays.
With CM 9000 the disk is not required ALL the time -- but with CM 10000 it
IS -- as I understand.

I searched there first BEFORE I posted to this group. You were far more
helpful than anything I found there in the FAQ's.

The very first thread on the Chessmaster forum is a FAQ one. Here is
quote from that FAQ thread, it refers to a patch for Chessmaste
10000:
"Q: Why would I want to install the patch?
A: It fixes some of the problems and adds new features, including th
ability to use the software without a CD. Also it is required fo
playing online!"

That depends who you ask. In most ways it is similar, but the top-
level navigation is entirely different. Most people say they like the
look of CM10 better.

That would be the culprit then. CM9000 only supports "Small Fonts". I
honestly didn't know if CM10th handled it any better until I tried it
just now, and it works!
Therefore, I recommend picking up a copy of CM10th. Or, rumor has it
that a new version of CM (supposedly called "Grandmaster"?) is going
to be released in about 4-6 months. So you might want to wait for
that.

You have been a GREAT HELP to me on this. I'm very grateful to you for
pointing it out.
I devised an entirely new Windows theme, just for CM 9000, with small fonts,
which seems to work. It is a pain in the neck but the only solution, I
suppose. Incredible that they didn't design CM 9000 to work with fonts of
various sizes.

That's a new one on me. Are you running Vista? That might be causing a
problem, and CM9000 doesn't support it.
Fire up Microsoft Word and see if you have the "Chessmaster 9000" font
available.
Do you have a laptop? If so, you might want to check if "ClearType" is
turned on. That will make fonts look "magenta", but I don't know about
invisible.
Finally you should check to see if you are using any setting other
than "Small Fonts" in your Display Properties. This can totally screw
up the look of dialogs, and will even make some buttons be partially
hidden or even entirely invisible.

No. I'm running XP Pro SP2.

I do have it turned on. I'll check. You are spot on. It does turn them
magenta.
