Subject: Fritz 9 - Anti-CD (DVD)? Patches?
I just bought Fritz 9 (from a reputable vendor) but am having problems with
the software complaining that I don't have the original CD and refusing to
run analysis mode. (it does say CD although this is a DVD)

Before I jump into the whole tech support routine, I'm wondering if there's
an anti-CD-check patch to just work around this? Or any known
incompatibilities or workarounds? Or patches? Vendor site seemed very
sparse.

(are there any issues in general with DVD software vs CD? This is the first
program I've bought for Windows XP on DVD)

thanks for any clues
Betsy

(also going to try installing it on another machine, see if it's just this
box...)

One would think so. But in case of the Linux CD's it was all the same
drive. It would not install from the originals. I created images from
these CD's reading them from the same drive ! After that I burned
copies based on the images on the same drive yet again ! And these
copies worked.

Trouble reading the original CD's when installing, but not when
creating images. Go figure...

This doesn't make any sense to me. I run linux as my gateway server and am
posting from it at the moment. I use Gentoo Linux currently, if you wonder.
I know how drives are mounted and the various ways you can do this. The
install for Redhat is a bootloader and if it is failing at the boot, then it
is likely your media or your drive.

And back to your original assertion that Fritz 9 is having issues with the
DVD. It sounds like a bad drive to me, as I mentioned.

Bad drive or bad media.

To followup,

I note that this is a brand-new DVD from a retail store, not a CD nor a
used game nor a grey-ket purchase. My home computer has a DVD +/- RW
drive and a DVD-ROM drive. The DVD-RW drive won't even read this DVD; the
DVD-ROM drive lets me install but then I get errors that it is not an
original game CD or not the right Engine CD. I un-installed and re-
installed very carefully, no difference.

The game does install and run perfectly on my work PC, but that's no help,
can't play chess at work.

Oh well, it's off to tech support I go.

(I take it there's no anti-DVD patch? Whatever happened to Nonyz?)

thanks Betsy

One possibility is a network installation and check, but of course only if
you have another PC connecting to your "problem-pc"

Maybe superfluous, but sometimes resetting to factory settings and doing a
new check solves the problem.

Also remember to check the "check" button firts before clicking OK when the
program asks for a check.

And third: check if the proper drive letter is displayed. I have encountered
an installation where I couldn't perform a proper check, only to find out
the drive letter it presented was incorrect.

CD/DVD drives are sometimes very picky on the used CD/DVD's.

Speaking from personal experience, installing an Office from CD-Rom did
not work when I put it in the DVD drive, but worked from a CD drive in
this one PC. So when installing on another PC I started with the CD
drive. No luck. There it was the other way around and I had to use the
DVD to install.

Or installing Linux from CD. First CD worked perfectly, CD 2 through 5
did not work, not on the CD drive not on the DVD drive. I always make
copies of my discs (if possible) for safe keeping just in case
something happens with the originals. Imagine my surprise when I tried
the copies instead and these did work.

I have found a few disks on occasion will not install from the
originals, so I go to backups. I found a slightly warped original disk
was the cause - not so much that you could easily see, but enough to
prevent accurate reading.

Sounds like flakey drives to me. I have 4 computers and 3 of them have
multiple drives and I haven't had this problem with any of them (although I
have had drives go bad).

The installation instructions are not very clear, having been written in
Gerglish. Re-read them carefully and try a re-install. If it still doesn't
work it's probably just your fault. There are never any technical issues
with CB software, ever. It's always the user's fault.
