Subject: Fritz Engine Issues
I am considering purchasing Fritz but during some reaearch I have become
aware of problems using various (though not all engines).

From what I can gather a lot of engines produce an "Unknown Error" message
if you try to use them on a system where Fritz is installed anwhere other
than C: (an exception to this rule being Crafty).

Now whilst I dont want to get in a slagging match, if this is the case then
surely it's a case of "Poor Programming or Bug Testing" on behalf of GMBH
(I'm making a lot of assumptions here based on things Iv'e read in formums
etc so I may be barking up the wrong tree) or equally it could be the engine
writers not adhering to proper proceedures ...... after all crafty is
supposed to work.

Just before Christmas I got a new Hard drive and during the installation
process XP ended up calling my DVD drive D: CDROM E: and my hard drive F:
(my Iriver MP3 player becomes the C: Drive when I Hook it up !!) XP has
resisted all attempts to rename drives etc.

so I guess my questions is

Does this problem exist ???

Thoughts and suggestions greatly appreciated

Had the same problem when reinstalling XP on my machine. Have a card
reader installed on it with 4 slots and 2 DVD drives. My harddisk ended
up becoming drive I...

If you look at "My computer" and your MP3 is _not_ hooked up, do you
see a C: drive ?

If yes, then click the "Remove hardware" button in the tray. You should
be able to remove the C: drive. After this, the C: drive should be gone
from "My computer".

If there is no C: drive in "My computer", open a "Command Prompt"
window. Type in the following:

SUBST C: F:\

This should create a virtual C: drive for you which just points to your
F: drive. You should have no problems loading any engine.

You can close the "Command Prompt" window, because this is system wide.
When you restart your system you'll have to this process again.

Now, if you have this virtual C: drive and you plug in your MP3, you
will need to "delete" this virtual drive if you want access to your
player. You can do so by opening the "Command prompt" window and typing

SUBST C: /d

This will delete your virtual drive and will connect C: to your MP3.

I had this problem with Fritz 8 and this workaround works for me. I
haven't got Fritz 9 (yet), so I don't know if the problem existst
there. If it is, then this workaround will most likely work there too.

No !

I used Fritz on C: as I use Fritz on F: with tons of engines and no
problem about it...

And if you do get the problem on old versions of Chessbase products,
you can always patch them...
