That's not a legal move. Don't you mean Qxg7?

I don't get your "white from the 7th and 8th rank". That's not chess.
Don't try to change the meaning of the square names or the way the
pieces can move.

Is Ivan hardware? Does it have its own board? Turn it around! Do you use
your own board? Turn it around! Or is it software?

You should put your move in an answer to Sanny's list of moves, so he
can find it easily.

> Just go to your search engine and put in Excalibur chess computer ...

Finding the manufacturer at excaliburelectronics.com was a little bit harder.

Are we talking about IVAN II Model 712, or some older version the
website doesn't mention?

You doing it like the manual says? Pressing MOVE at the start of the
game and then arranging the pieces like the LCD suggests?

When you re-arrange without turning the board, the colors of the squares
are wrong. If one stills wants the queen-rule to be true, the pieces
have to be mirrored. I'm not sure what's more confusing.

F-6 x B-2 ..Bishop x pawn

Ivan 2.5 ..

It has its own board and pieces , it is a table top computer ...The
program is inside the chess board ..It is built in...I can take it
anywhere because it runs off batter and it has a long battery life
too..

Just go to your search engine and put in Excalibur chess computer ...

That is how it plays White , you move the white pieces to the 7th and
8th rank and you put your black pieces on the first and second rank...I
am not sure why they do it that way ?
So Ivans white queen is on E-8 and the black queen is on E-one....
The 7th rank has all your white pawns and the 8th has all the
rest..Queens on their own color.
It never bugged me in the past but once i started to play computer vs
computer then it started to bug me because i all most always have to
play black...

I have played it as white and black vs FRITZ 9 but the other guy was not
confused so the games worked ..Ivan lost BOTH games ...But still the
games showed me ivans weakness..

Yes you did get ivans move .

Ivan is a Excalibur product and i have had it for a few years ..I
like their stuff , the look of the machine and the pieces BUT my biggest
complaint is it plays White from the 7th and 8th rank and it bugs me
because i like to play computer vs computer ..Ivan will think your black
queen is on E-One...

Do you have a chess computer ?

Ivan in the chess computer world is weak but strong i the human chess
world ....

If i were to recommend one of their games i say get the " Grand Master
" game because it has come down in price ..It is larger than Ivan and
stronger elo....BUT does it play white from the 7th and 8th rank ? I do
not know , i would ask that before i would buy it .....I have thought
about getting it myself , a nice table top game but that flaw bugs me
enough i mite not ..
It does not bother me when play it myself as white , just when i want
to play other computers....

Which knight? There's an error in your algebraic notation: Nd2 is
ambiguous, there's a knight on f3 that could move to d2, too. The right
notation is Nbd2, specifying the originating file.

Look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_chess_notation

It would be nice if added tags according to the PGN specification to your
move lists, one could copy/paste the games into Arena and the like.

I was totally on the wrong board when I wrote that. I Thought that 15.
was dxe4 dxe4, but Ivan played d4. When I corrected that, the game made
much more sense. But I think that's where Ivans trouble started, looks
like it only saw 4 plies ahead.

You missed black's last move and there should be a + after each checking

Pawn F-7 to F-5 ...

You and Ivan think alike .. Ivan has a Battle Screen and it shows you
what move or moves it is thinking of playing and it thought about
moving rook A-8 to B-8 for about 20 seconds then it went to a higher
level and starting thinking about the pawn F-5 move for about 30 seconds
and then it made that move..Glad it did not waste a move on the rook....

Ivan thinks it is a head by 0.I .....basically a even game now ..

I will have a longer night of work so i will move late tonight ...Maybe
ten or eleven PM Seattle time ? I HOPE i am home before that .....

This will be a interesting end game ...

But I can see what it thought at shallower depths, so I can estimate
what Ivan or Getclub might see here.

Pushing the a pawn seems the right thing to do, doing a4 now might cost
Getclub its rook.

I used to work different hours and get off around II.00 AM so then i
just go there from work when i had the next day OFF ..It is so much
easier going there from my job than from my house ..
I mite not get there until Sept because my days off are so busy right

Still pessimistic, Toga II sees Ivan 2 pawns ahead.

According to the analysis this is a hard position for Getclub. 28 legal
moves, the three best moves from depth 15 and later are completely
different from the ones at depth 11. And the order of these 3 moves just
reversed at depth 17.

i had a new roof put on and i have a bunch of bare wood..I have 20

buy more primer and start doing 5 sections every day i get off ..I just
do not want to waste my whole day off primering... So it mite be a
little while before i get to the Chess Mall as i call it...

GC will have a hard time stopping the A,B,C,D, pawns....

The last two GC moves seem bad to me now even though i did not think
they were bad at the time he moved ..
I am not a strong player but i still like to play..There is a Mall
about two cities away from me that has a Chess board in the floor and a
clock , you each get 30 minutes on your clock for a hour game if you
use all the time..I like to go there some times when i have the time and
a lot of players there are very good ..The chess pieces are made of wood
and stand about one to two feet tall ..+ there are benches around and
other people watch ..If you win you can keep playing up to 3 games then
you have to sit down..Winner picks the color too..I have lost my last 5
games their..That bugs me ..ha ha....
BUT I HAVE FUN..
There is one guy i have not seen in a long time but i called him the
BOA CONSTRICTOR because of the way he moves his pawns .He rarely brings
them out two spots , just one forward and it seems like he just squeezes
you down ..I only played him one time and lost but i seen him play a
hand full of times and i never seen him lose.
Another guy i played told me he was a chess teacher , he said his elo
was around I900 ..
He took me to school ..ha ha......I let him get a knight down on me (
knight in my back ranks ) i was playing white ..and the teacher said ,
" never allow a horse in your house " that was his tip to me.....I seen
him play a hand full of games and he never lost ..I was hoping the Boa
Constrictor vs The Teacher would happen but i never did see them play
each other ..They mite have but i do not go there every day..I go there
about once every two months...Sometimes once every 3 months ..If i
lived by that place id be a regular ..The times i go there i see the
same people so they must live close by.

There is a few people i have played are about as strong as me , i have
played them a few games over the years , i won some and lost some....

That's interesting analysis. Every move other than Nd6 is a least than 2
pawn down since depth 15, and Nd6 itself is getting worse at every step
now.

No, I don't own HIARCS. And I don't do much engine-engine matches, there
are people doing that more professionally. It's only interesting if
there is one engine involved, for which I was a (co-)developer.

Yes when ivan was out to a -2.5 i was thinking ivan will win too but GC
middle game is stronger than ivan's middle game that is the one thing i
have noticed about the games they have played vs each other.
To me it seems like you should improve GC 's end game a little more ..

This will be a interesting end game , GC's two Knight power pieces vs
Ivans two bishop power pieces ..+ we each have a rook ..

we each have 5 pawns

All 3 of my pieces have long range power vs your one rook that has
long range power .
Your two knights can jump my pieces and get behind them easy so i am not

Ivans move is Queen D-6 to E-7 ...

Your GC move is pawn E-4 to E-5 ..You put down D-4 to D-5 ...

Now GC has fought all the way back to a + I.3 advantage ...

I am not sure the bishop can get to G-7 ..If it would have moved the
D-pawn forward then queen takes bishop ...I was thinking bishop to C-3
to pin the knight .....But now ivan has to save the queen .....If i was
ivan id try and get the white bishop to e-6 and castle...

what about this end game GC queen takes rook , queen takes queen ,
bishop takes queen , king takes bishop ....Then who will win ? i have no
idea....
i would say GC and Ivan are even and they usually have pretty excting
games.....

Back in the 80s, when I had some interest in playing chess, I played my
father's simple Mephisto chess computer. I managed to win to win against
its still limited but not easiest level once. I put that down on paper.
I still have it, and now I have as an PGN file on my computer, too.

I once analyzed it with a descent engine, quite disillusioning.

I was never really good at chess, and now I probably suck, but I lost

getclub was strong enough to see that taking the knight would have
been a mistake. After 9. Qxe4 ivan could have responeded 9... d5. Now
getclub would have to move the queen, for example 10. Qe5, and then
Ivan could have responded 10... Nxc2+, forking the king and rook.

It looks like both Ivan and getclub were strong enough to see that
taking the knight was bad. However, getclub saw it too late. It
shouldn't have played 8. Nf3 and let Ivan win a pawn.

Bishop B-2 x A- I ..Bishop takes rook..

Ivan - 2.5

Ivan is playing a lot better in this game , BUT GC should have had a
free knight ..

No it shouldn't. Taking the knight would have been a mistake because
of d5 followed by Nxc2+.

Pawn D-7 to D-5 ...

That is the flaw in ivans program , if you temp him with a pawn he mite
not see the piece that is covering it...

Yes GC should have took the knight with the queen and the queen covers
the C-2 pawn so GC should be a knight up now ...

will move when i get home from work....
