No other chess program has gained as many world championship titles in
recent years as Shredder. Shredder 10 is even stronger than all

I think this is all good and well. A new even more powerful chess program,
but why is this important? I am not asking this question to be a wiseguy, I
am trying to learn about this subject.

I already have Fritz 8 and ChessMaster v10. Both of these programs can
destroy me at will on the medium settings much less the highest settings. I
assume these programs can methodically beat 99% of the players out there.
Am I wrong on this? Why do we need even stronger programs when the current
programs are already sooooooooooo proficient or so they seem to me.

Thanks,

Jim

For me ... it is all about analysis ... and Shredder is my favorite. If I
play a particularily tactical game, I let Fritz or Junior analyze it, but if I
play a positional or mostly closed game, I tend to let Shredder analyze it.

Exactly. The style of various engines and versions of engines can be
very different.

I'd love to believe the rating increase of 80 point, but when I look at
the rating difference between v7.04 and v9.0, I have my doubts that
this time Stephan MK has broken another barrier. Which is why I respect
the Hiarcs team a little more: they only release a new version when
it's really stronger, not just because a year has passed by since last
version...

Normally the release is in January or February.
Why should they state an improvement that would soon be contradicted if
it wasn't just about accurate?
The tests made by people since the release indicates that the estimate
of an 60-80 improvement is correct.
